They'll easily make the playoffs but how can you win in October when your team defense and bullpen is this bad? This collapse started in the 8th with the two gift runs the Yankee infield gave the Rangers and Holmes finished it off. Right behind the numbers of the 11 blown saves a couple of them bad defense also played a factor. They go hand and hand, bad defense and relievers with spotty command. It's not pretty.

Wow, just got home and sadly put the game on! With bases loaded and a 3-2 count! Grand slam!

Boone in the postgame wouldn't answer the pulling Clay from closer question "while emotions were raw" but wouldn't commit to keeping him in the role like he always has before. He has to talk with Cashman first.

Honestly, we shouldn't be mad at guys like Holmes and DJ. Physically, mentally they just aren't up to the task. The blame lies at the feet of the feckless manager who keeps putting clearly unfit personnel in these positions/situations. And if it is pressure from above driving these reckless decisions, he needs to grow a pair and tell Cashman to butt out.

Holmes 11 blown saves.
Aroldis Chapman's highest total in his worst year: 5 blown saves.

But when Chappy blew the game giving up a HR he would smile. That would piss me off.

I guess that's something. Honestly, I have very little confidence in any of these other bums, but right now you KNOW Holmes ain't it. You HAVE to try someone else. Holmes is bleeding wins for you in the middle of a division race.

You can kiss the division goodbye folks. This is just too disturbing a trend of losing to inferior teams when the Yankees should be fattening up instead. Holmes is just garbage and should never see the mound in a closing situation. Demote him to 8th inning duties and make Kahnle the closer. I'm still pretty confident this comes down to the last 6 games of the season. Yankee Orioles in the Penultimate series then Yankees/Pirates and Orioles/Twins (who could both be fighting for seeding) for the final series. Yankees and Orioles are just both not winning enough to really pull away from each other.

Take him out of the closer role and put him in setup and put Kahnle as the closer who seems to be like really good right now or Cousins even. I think theres ways to make Clay Holmes useful, but he gives up too much contact to close which isn't going to work if the defense isn't elite. DJ is done. Hate to say it, but If he can't even play defense he has no use on this team.

Remaining schedules:
vs CWS vs TB 3 @ BOS 3 @ DET 3 vs SF 3 vs DET 3 @ NYY 3 @ MIN 3
@ TEX @ CHC 3 vs KC 3 @ BOS 4 @ SEA 3 @ OAK 3 vs BAL 3 vs PIT 3
So Orioles have 16 left before they play the Yankees and Yankees 17 left before playing the Orioles.
Unless one team like really goes super winning or super losing while the other does the opposite I still think the teams won't be more than 2 games apart by the time that series comes along.

He doesn't have the mental makeup to handle it. He seems to loose all ability to pitch in pressure situations. If I ever see DJ in pinstripes again, it'll be too soon. Thanks for a couple of nice seasons, but you cannot play anymore. Can't hit, can't field...just stop playing him. (I know this isn't realistic with the braintrust running this team)

(I know this isn't realistic with the braintrust running this team) The bouncing is what concerns me. It's not like hes just missing pitches. Cone was literally trying to coach the team from the booth and he was completely correct.
