Bellinger gets a FB near middle, pulls it hard but foul off 1st, maybe hitting someone? Takes a cutter low/away, 1-1 Takes a slider that starts at him, gets the inner 3rd, taken, 1-2 Fb on the outside corner, pulled to Torres, who backhands from almost a knee to make sure, gets up, throws him out, game over!! Yanks win 2-0, their 2nd straight shutout over a hot Cubs team in Wrigley!
Yanks get back to 22 over on the season, 82-60, and assure themselves of finishing about .500 for the 32nd straight season, the 2nd longest such streak in MLB history. The longest? The old dynasty Yankees, who were over .500 from 1926 through 1964, a record 39 straight seasons. If were lucky, we'll live to see the Yankees break their own record in 2032.

Yanks temporarily pick up a 1/2 game on the division and move back into a flatfooted tie with the O's at 82-60. O's trail the Rays 1-0 bottom 2nd, but have bases loaded with just 1 out.
Red Sox play the White Sox at Fenway at 7:10 pm. Jays play the Braves in Atlanta at 7:20 pm.

The Yankees shut out today was their 13th team shutout of the season (they don't have a CG shutout from any pitcher this year), and the 4th time they've thrown back to back shutouts this season, and the second time they've done it against the same team.
The first pair was against the Twins at the Stadium May 15-16, 4-0 and 5-0. The second pair was on the West Coast trip in May, blanking the Mariners 5-0 in the last game in Seattle and the Padres in the first game, 8-0. The 3rd was in late last month, when they blanked the Guardians in the 3rd game at home, 6-0, and then the Rockies in the first game, 3-0.

Realize it's one game, but...any consideration given to making Nestor the closer?

gonna call schmidt & cortes co-potg for the combined shut out. suddenly the rotation feels pretty strong as we head down the stretch. wells gets HM for knocking in the only run they'd need in addition to throwing out 2 runners and calling a great game.

Stars of the game...HM to Torres, the leadoff hit and scored the first run in the 1st, drew a walk later, and came up with several excellent plays around 2nd, including a great tag on the steal attempt by Hoerner in the 4th. Judge with a walk in the 6th, and leading the double steal that led to the throwing error, scoring the vital insurance run in the 6th. Judge doesn't have Ohtani's 46 steals, but he's stolen 8 without being caught this season.
3rd star of the game: Wells with another great game behind the plate, getting several calls for Schmidt and Cortes, and knocking in the 1st run with a grounder, adding a solid single later on, and throwing out two outstanding base stealers, Hoerner and Crow-Armstrong, to kill two incipient rallies. 2nd star of the game: Clarke Schmidt who came off the IL and looked the same as when he left, throwing a variety of pitches all over the zone. He struck out just 2, but only walked 1 and almost managed to get through 5 on a limited pitch count. Welcome back, Mr. Schmidt. 1st star of the game: The Nasty One, for doing a great job in relief for the 1st time in a long time, piggybacking on Schmidt, and earning the win with 4 1/3 almost perfect innings, just one walk off him with 2 outs in the 7th, striking out 3. He was smart enough to realize the ball wasn't carrying for anyone, and pitched to contact, getting himself a well-deserved win, especially in light of 4 or 5 games early in the season where the hitters didn't hit or the bullpen blew the lead, or both. Kudos to Nestor, who gets to 9-10 on the season, and lowers his ERA to 3.97.

Realize it's one game, but...any consideration given to making Nestor the closer? He's got the guts and guile, but not the swing and miss stuff needed against elite teams and hitters. Better in the long reliever role, I think. They do need a lefty out there with just Hill and Mayza, but he's not the power lefty they need.
