I thought I read somewhere that Nestor is expected to make his next start against Boston. How about this thought. They make Schmidt and Nestor a team. Start Schmidt for five then Nestor to finish. Next time start Nestor for five and Schmidt to finish. Why not? It could work. It is nice having a guy in the bullpen who can go multiple innings.

Next time start Nestor for five and Schmidt to finish. Why not? Not a chance. Schmidt had just reached a point where he could negotiate a line up the third time through before his injury and was pitching into the 7th and 8th inning. I want to see if he still has that ability…

Judges isn't hitting HR's so he steals a run! Yankees took at chance with 2 outs, but it paid off for them

Yankees win!!! Pitching has made it look real easy the past two days at Wrigley. Against a hot Cubs team too.

Glad to see Holmes sitting down, especially with Cortes rolling along with confidences. Cortes was pitching well. I don't know why Holmes was throwing in the first place.

Realize it's one game, but...any consideration given to making Nestor the closer? I wouldn't mind if the Yankees named him their Closer.

He's got the guts and guile, but not the swing and miss stuff needed against elite teams and hitters. Better in the long reliever role, I think. They do need a lefty out there with just Hill and Mayza, but he's not the power lefty they need. I trust him more than anyone else in the pen right now. He might also have more swing and miss stuff being he would only pitch 1 inning and doesn't have to pace himself.

yeah the power thing. but that's been going on all season. and though not your typical lead-off (if there is such a thing anymore) he's filling that role nicely getting on base and seeing lots of pitches in front of soto & judge. If he's gonna stay at leadoff I don't care about his "lack of power", nor should anyone else. And as you noted, I think the "classic" leadoff hitter is a thing of the past. If Torres is hitting, I couldn't careless if he hit for power. The Yankees lineup has enough power hitters, they need players that can get on base and hit with runners in scoring position. In my opinion, HRs are nice but they aren't always needed, sometimes all it takes for a team to win a game are clutch singles and doubles.

He may want to give that more thought. Mo was a starter.. So were a couple of other Hall of Fame Closers.
After reading that comment, Cortes lost points with me. While I understand that eventually he was to be a starting pitcher, but it's late in the season and the Yankees need all the help that they can get in their bullpen, especially late in the game.

It's my understanding one starter will go to the pen now that Schmidt is back. We know it's not gonna be Cole, Rodon or Gil. Doubtful Stroman would take a "demotion" very well, and he seems to be a little too emotional to close anyway. Looked to me like Hamilton had the mental & physical qualities to close earlier in the season before he got hurt.

As I said, Cortes might wanna give that a little more thought. At 30 yo, closing would likely lengthen his career and earn him a lot more $$$$. I thought I read somewhere that Nestor is expected to make his next start against Boston. OK...apparently they're now going with a 6 man rotation. This question remains...moving forward, who's the closer? Evidently fans get a jolt out of "swing & miss" closers who create excitement...guys like Chapman. I'll pass. A closer who can 3 outs with as little drama as possible...weak ground balls, pop ups or fly balls...works just fine for me. An out's an out...regardless of how it's recorded. I don't know how long they will continue to do so, but I predicted earlier in the season that the Yankees would go to a 6 man rotation. As mentioned earlier in the season I think it's a good idea because of Cole's injury and because they have a couple of pitchers that might be on an innings limit.
I agree about a Closer with swing and miss stuff. Swing and miss stuff is nice, but outs of any kind are what counts.

It came across as Cortes is expendable. Most fans remember that Stroman could not change his routine to take the Opening Day start. And so Cortes got the ball. And no matter how well he pitched this year, he lost his start. I know a smarter organization could have handled this better.

No problem giving Weaver a shot at it...even though he said he blacked out in yesterday's game. Just goes to show the immense pressure that comes with the job. Isn't it amazing the difference between the 9th inning and the 8th? In my opinion, Holmes is a much better pitcher in the 8th inning.

I think this was a unique situation...having Nestor ready not knowing what to expect from Schmidt. Made sense.
