Cole has rolling until that intentional walk, now he's fallen off the wagon. Cole learned the definition of irony today.

Fb thigh high, inside middle, fouled off Wells, who's hurting a bit. Curve into the zone near middle, taken, 0-2, and they throw behind O'Neill but he gets back. Curve on the high outside corner, pulled to the right of 2nd, right between Volpe and Torres, Volpe dives to his left but can't get it, 2 run single makes it 7-1 Sox. You don't go looking for a strikeout against Yoshida, Paulie, he has one of the lowest K rates among good hitters in MLB. You go for what you got, and sharp grounder and you hope it's close enough to an infielder to get a DP on.
Cole out, Hill in. Too late.

Cole showed me a lot today...He is no leader when it comes to the pitching staff of this team...You're supposed to lead by example...not by walking someone and showing the world you fear him. Sorry..but those are the facts. Today was insane, but he's led this staff multiple times before by example so I think your statement is little much overall.

Sorry..but those are the facts. It's schizophrenic. We've seen him pitch big games in big spots before, many times. But he has two teams he can't pitch against, the two worst as far as Yankee fans are concerned: the Sox and the Mets.

cole really looks bad here. now hits o'nell. 3rd hit batter this game.
clearly the HBP in 1st was "intentional". don't like to see your ace show fear facing about any hitter with the IBB. seemed innocent enough at the time. judge is IBB'ed all the time. but cole was never the same after that. and then devers proved cole right by getting a hit. you don't have to walk the guy, just keep the ball off the plate and make him chase. maybe easier said ...
and mayza gets the big DP to get out of the inning.

Mayza rescues Cole from more earned runs with the double play ball.

Abreu takes a sinker at the knees, it's a strike, called a ball, 50-50 on Gameday. Bad call again. Sinker below and inside middle, topped back to Mayza, who starts a 1-6-3 DP to end the inning. Abreu thinks he beat it and it was close, but the Sox don't challenge. Inning over.
Bottom 5, 7-1 Sox, and it's a long way back from here, even against the Sox' bullpen and defense. Volpe, Verdugo and Torres for the Yanks in the 5th.

I always liked Cole. But today he showed me he is a primadonna.

Look on the bright side, maybe this experience will give Cole the inspiration to come back next season and once again dominate...and hopefully, we'll never again see him intentionally walk anybody, with no outs and nobody on! That was simply a poor decision. And if it was Boone's idea, then even worse, because it would mean it was that decision that caused Cole to lose his concentration for the rest of the game.

Still a winnable game with the Boston bullpen struggling, but it didn't have to be this much of a deficit.

Verdugo takes a FB above and outside middle, 0-1 Takes a FB high, outer half, 1-1 Change thigh-high in the middle taken, 1-2 Fb down the middle, fouled off. Sinker inside, lays off, 2-2 Change tails well outside, 3-2 Sinker starts outer 3rd, tails well outside, ball 4. Good job by Verdugo coming back from down 1-2 for the walk.
