Don't know if they mentioned it during the game, but Red Sox broadcaster Joe Castiglione announced during today's game that he was retiring after this season after 42 years with Boston. His first season was 1983, the last year of Carl Yastrzemski, the longest tenure of any active broadcaster. He's a good one, an old-school pro.

this is how we won games during our early season run. solid pitching and enough hitting.
a number of contributors to this one with rodon setting the tone with 5 1/3 innings leaving w a 4-2 lead which the bullpen made stick.
stanton got it started with a double and provided insurance with a sac fly. judge with the 2-run bomb to monument park. gleyber w a solo shot. and despite a terrible game at the plate, volpe made some great defensive plays that make him a plus for the game.
seem to be hitting on more cylinders as we head into the off day before the final west coast trip of the season.

Don't know why Gleyber insists on unnecessarily using that flip. With the way Gleyber has taken to the leadoff spot, if he could play third base, I'd bring him back. I think Jazz needs to play 2nd base nest season. Think about First base for him. Same side of the field. Rod Carew did it… we need a 1B…

Looks like Nettles, Thurman and Reggie in the backround. Can't tell who that Yankee is in the dugout. Thanks for posting it!

I thought this was a cool picture. Anyone know the coefficient of restitution for a ML baseball? That ball was nearly mashed in half!

The stars of the game...Honorable mentions abound...the excellent relief work again. Hamilton in relief of Rodon with two big K's, stranding the runner at 3rd. Hill in relief of Hamilton, getting the 1st DP ball from Duran to kill that inning. Holmes for getting past the cheap bloop double by Wong to get Yoshida to flyout to end the 8th, and to Kahnle in the 9th for locking it down getting the 2nd double play from Duran to end things. Good job all-around from everyone except maybe Cousins, and thanks to Kahnle, his poor outing didn't cost. To Volpe, despite the terrible day at the plate, and in a deep slump, kept his head in the game and turned a great pivot on the 1st Duran DP, and his timer worked perfectly on the 2nd, his throw just beating Duran to end the game. Gleyber Torres, for just reaching the Porch with a HR in the 3rd to make it a 2-0 game, and the infield single starting the 7th, coming around to score the last run, giving the pen some extra breathing room. Oh, and a special honorable mention to HP ump Hunter Wendelstedt. He missed a few calls against the Yanks, but he slowly bled the Sox white with about 10-12 close calls (or not so close, he also missed at least two 100% strikes for Crawford at one point), against the Sox, and it helped. A lot.
3rd star of the game...Stanton for the RBI double to give the Yanks the early lead, and the sac fly that scored Torres in the 7th for the tack-on run. Got a little bit out of his slump today.
2nd star of the game...Judge, for the towering 2-run blast off the hitter's eye, the windows of the restaurant/bar above Monument Park to double the Yanks' lead to 4-0, allowing them some room to hold against the Sox offense/running. His 2nd HR in 3 games, and if he's going again, that should allow Soto some air to get going as well. Big if it's happening that way. They need both going to have any shot in the post-season.
1st star of the game...Not his best game, but a good one for Rodon against a good Sox lineup. Cruised the first three innings, ran into trouble in the 4th and 5th, but held it together, made it through 5 1/3 with just 2 runs allowed for a career-high 15th win of the season, and unlike Cole, he's 2 for 3 vs. the Red Sox this year.

That is, indeed, a home plate picture just after he hit the ball that won the pennant in 1976 off of Mark (not Zack) Littell. I love it, too.
