Weaver gets the win in relief, and despite giving up a leadoff single to Raleigh, Hamilton aced his acid test, whiffing ttwo dangerous hitters, and getting some help from Wells, alertly nailing Rodriguez off 3rd after he had to dodge Aronzarena's bat.

Spraying some well deserved champagne on qwik...for his season long Yankee coverage on the Yankees' Bronx Bombers message board! Thanks, pal...Keep up the great work from here on out, and into the post-season!
Go Yankees!

5 game lead w 10 to go. next step is to win the division and then the league for home field through the AL playoffs.
two baserunning blunders by the mariners in 2 games. tonight's was game changing and saved our bacon (and bailed holmes out). going w rizzo for potg for the 2 rbi doubles including the game winner. maybe, just maybe, he's back. would be huge.
hard not to call nestor co-potg for the 6 shutout innings. HM to the bullpen except holmes. special mention for weaver who was superman & hamilton for closing. holmes needs to move down in the pecking order. would rather see cousins and hill. wells deserves some credit for being aware to jrod getting hung out to dry.
goat was the home plate ump for some terrible calls.

Had to go find a clip of the pick off in the 10th. Unreal brain dead base running. Where was he going? But thanks!

Well, you can take Holmes out of the 9th, but you can't take the blown save out of Holmes.

at this point, i'd put weaver, hamilton, kahnle, cousins and hill ahead of him. even stroman and when the PS begins, another starter goes to the pen. maybe you only bring him when we're losing or in a blowout like mayza or leiter.
hamilton looks to be back and can be a real asset.

OK...3 stars of the game. Not many honorable mentions in a game where the offense got just 3 hits and piled up 15 K's. First, Dominguez for keeping his head after the early botch of the routine fly to deep right center in the 2nd, working a walk, stealing. 2nd and moving to 3rd on Raleigh's bad throw, and scoring on the 1st Rizzo hit. Hard to give Nestor an HM but Holmes blew his brilliant and well-deserved W. Another great game for him, he kept his head as well after Dominguez' howler, and kept the M's from tying the game in the 2nd. Nestor's been outstanding since the Angels hammered him in early August: 4-0 in 6 starts and a relief appearance, ERA of 1.58 in 40 innings, just one bad blip against the Cards. WPA says he's the 2nd star of the game, but this one was about clinching the playoffs, and while Nestor made a big contribution, he'll have to give way to guys whose contributions were decisive for winning the game and clinching the post-season. That's it for the HMs, we're set up for the three stars for tonight...
3rd star of the game: Weaver, for cleaning up after Holmes spit the bed in the 8th. Leadoff walk in the 9th? No biggie! Struck out Raley, got Rojas to fly out to center, struck out Rodriguez. A well-deserved win in relief, improving his record to 6-3 and his ERA to 3.02.
2nd star of the game: Goal by Hamilton; assist to Wells! 1 run lead? Ghost-runner?? Leadoff slap single to left by Raleigh, moving the tying run to 3rd with nobody out??? No problem!!!. Just get Arozarena to whiff on a slider on the corner away, losing the bat right at Rodriguez off 3rd, causing him to dive out of the way, allowing Wells to nail him for a unique K-pickoff 2-5 double play, then whiff Tuner on an 0-2 FB at 98.5 just above middle to end it! Easy-peasy lemon-squeezy!! Great job, passing his audition as a closer. At least one of the committee, anyway.
1st star of the game: I AM THE GHOST OF RIZZO PAST...Mired in a terrible slump, 5 for 39 over his last 11 games, 0 runs, 0 RBI and just one extra base hit, lined a hard single to right to score Dominguez in the 2nd, and cracked a double just fair down the line in right to score Dominguez again as the ghost-runner. Old Rizzo showed up right when the Yanks needed him to. He was all the offense tonight, and the pitching made his 2 RBI stand up for the playoff-clinching win. Thanks for waking up the echoes, AR.
Oh, and a dishonorable mention to HP ump Wolf. Yanks had a ton of calls go their way the other day, and Wolf more than made up for it the last 3 innings tonight, multiple egregious bad calls against the Yanks hitters on balls well out of the zone, including for strike 3 more than once, and Holmes got nailed for two terrible ball calls on sliders that were clearly strikes, the batter before Turner.

we're 9-3 over our last 12. so hopefully getting hot at the right time.
after a terrible 6 weeks, since july 26, we're 29-18, which i believe i heard kay say was the best record in baseball over that time frame. only suzyn knows why that happens.
despite holmes, in the last week, definitely winning some tough games w 2 walk-offs and now tonight's extra inning win. so despite all the warts, we have both the best road record and best against teams over .500 which augurs well for the PS.
good night, alarm goes off in 5 hrs.

The series finale is tomorrow, and the Yanks have clinched the season' series with their 4th win, but it doesn't matter anymore as they clinched over the M"s anyway on overall record. They clinch against the Tigers too. Detroit can theoretically tie them at 89-73 if they win out and the Yanks lose out, but the Yanks still get in by winning the season's series against Detroit, 4-2.
It's a 4:10 pm matinee on YES. Clarke Schmidt (5-3, 2.41 ERA) starts for the Yanks, he's pitched well in two games off the IL, just 1 run in 9 2/3 innings, but two no-decisions. The Mariners have come off rookie righty Emerson Hancock and will turn in desperation to another of their aces, Logan Gilbert (7-11, 3.24 ERA). He's been up-and-down his last 5 starts, outstanding work against the Rays and Cards, intermixed with poor games against the Dodgers, A's and Rangers.
OK, that's it for the game preview. One last check of notifications.
