2 more baserunners...geez...Schmidt has nuthin' today. Actually, considering the poor effort the team gave him in the first inning (hangover blues), I'd say he's having a really good game keeping it close. 3 H / 2 BB in the 1st... |

how concerned should we be about Volpe? I'm not concerned at all...as long as at the end of the season, Cashman showcases him as the best fielding SS in the game...and eventually some sucker team takes the bait...landing us a good pitcher in the process. LOL |

how concerned should we be about Volpe? I'd say definitely somewhat concerned at a minimum. You'd hope to see some progression from year one to year two, and while his BA is up some (thanks to a fast start), I'd say if anything he's regressed as a whole. He's been awful for months now. He'll get hot for a couple, few games, then disappear for a few weeks. The plate discipline is poor. He's young, there is time, but maybe he's just a good glove guy who doesn't hit all that much. |

Takes a curve on the inside corner, down in the zone, 0-1
Fouls off a cutter above and inside middle, 0-2
Bounces a curve over home, he doesn't chase, 1-2
Curve starts in the zone, but dives down and in, 2-2
Slider starts in the zone, breaks well inside, from 0-2 to 3-2
Curve hangs above and inside middle, lined to right for a hit, probably finishing off what little chance Schmidt had to get through 5 innings.

Takes a sinker about 3 inches outside, called a strike anyway, bad call goes the Yanks way, 0% on Gameday and not close.
Slider misses outside above the knees, 1-2
Slider dives well outside waist high, taken, 2-2
Cutter just below the high outside corner, popped high just behind the mound, Rizzo calls everyone off, catches, 1 down.

Is it against Schmidt's religion to finish a hitter quickly from an 0-2 count or something?

Chases the cutter outside, hits it off the end of the bat, the looper one hops to Torres on the OF grass, he plays it, turns and throws him out, inning over.
Top 5, 3-2 Mariners.
20 pitches in the 4th for Schmidt, 86 through 4. He might start the 5th, almost certainly won't finish it.
2-3-4 for the Yanks: Soto, Judge and Chisholm.

Yeah, but...Dominguez losing the ball in the sun...if he catches it, it's 1 run and not nearly as much BB/H/Pitch count damage. |
