Keegan Akin in to face Wells, Stanton and Chisholm. Interesting to sit down Dominguez and go with the better lefty on lefty matchups. It's a book move, and Akin is good too.
Still...interesting.

Wells is 0-4 vs. Akin with 1 K... Takes a FB low, 1-0 Slider on the corner away, swung on and missed, but why wouldn't you take a strike in that situation? I dunno. FB outer 3rd, waist high, fouled, 1-2 Takes his timeout. Takes a FB well high, inner half, ducks a bit. 2-2 Bounces a slider outside, 3-2 Work the walk, Austin, one of your 11 pitch specials, please Slider in the zone low and away, fouled. FB in the zone near the top, in the middle, Wells late and under, pops it back of 3rd, Cowser races in and catches, 2 down.

Well, Soto and Judge tried but the two can only do so much.

Stanton takes a FB low near middle, 0-1 FB outside middle, Stanton pops it high on the right side, Westburg goes back on the short grass, catches, game over.
That's the thing Coney...the O's are NOT fully healthy. Four different good young starters on the IL and out for this season and 3 of them for part of next season, too, and their elite closer, who should be back to start next year.
O's hold on to win 9-7. Yanks lose their 2nd straight, Magic Number stays at 1. Lead in the East down to 4 games. If they're going to do it against the O's, it'll have to be against their ace, Burnes, who, after a bad month in August, is once-again ace-like in September.
Before I forget: Judge’s 57th HR: 112.7 mph, 412 feet, 33° launch angle, a HR in 29 of 30 MLB parks.

I'll check back after the bottom of 9th... I believe this game was "called" when Yanks were down 6-1. Final score - 9-7 O's.

Well, Soto and Judge tried but the two can only do so much. Some other guys have to step it up in the playoffs. Martian, Wells, Jazzy, Stanton, looking at you.

Hangs the slider near the inside corner below the waist, terrible slider, and Judge deposits it in the bullpen in left center, Yanks cut it to 2, 9-7! I'm happy for them. I'm happy for Judge. Four games in a row with a HR, his 57th this season. But they'll have to prove it against Dominguez now. He's gettable, but can the guys below Judge get him? Can they get anybody ? We all focus on the 9th but the Yankees wasted lots of scoring opportunities tonight.

This felt like a foregone conclusion once Strohman was picked to start. Judge and Soto pad their stats, other than that, pretty piss poor effort. On to the next one.
If I didn't see Strohman again this season, I'd be a happy camper. Hell, next season, too; unfortunately we're stuck with him.

It’s the same goddamn script. Without homers they have a difficult time scoring. In the playoffs against better pitching this lineup will be the usual.

OK, not much more to say about this one, the bad BABIP luck, bad pitching and bad defense early on buried them and they spent the rest of the game trying to dig out of a deep hole, and couldn't do it.
Just 2 more HRs in the last four games and Judge and Soto get to 100 for the year.
Game 3 is tomorrow at 7:07 pm on YES again. Corbin Burnes, 15-8 with a 2.95 ERA (and 3-1 with a 1.08 ERA in 25 innings in his last 4 starts, the last two were back-to-back 7 inning shutouts, both against the very hot Tigers, and both were wins) starts for Balitmore. The Yanks counter with their sometimes ace, Gerrit Cole, who should be at least competent, as he's not facing the Red Sox or Mets. Cole followed his worst start, physically and mentally, a bombing by the now-dead-for-the-season Red Sox with his best start of the season, 9 innings of 1-run ball for a win against the A's in Oakland. Cole is 7-5 on the season with a 3.67 ERA.
Looking ahead to the Pirates series, Pittsburgh, who is out of the race and has been for almost a month now, has lined up their three best starters to face the Yanks. Hard throwing righty Jared Jones in the 1st game, uber-rookie Paul Skenes in the Saturday game, and Bailey Falter on Sunday. Now technically, both Keller and Ortiz are tougher than Falter, but he's a lefty junkballer, and they're righties, so you know what that means: it means there are no gimmes for the Yanks this weekend, either.

Did you wonder about the use of Stroman tonight ? I remember him having been unable to take the ball for the home opener because he only had a month to adjust his schedule. I just didn't see it as probable that he was going to have a good start. Don't have any suggestions on alternatives, just did not think this had much of a chance to work.

Poteet would have been the only other option.

I thought they should have started Poteet, but he seemed to run out of gas in his 3rd inning, so not positive he'd be a whole lot better, but I cannot imagine him being worse. Strohman is unusable now. He's basically a batting practice pitcher at this point. He should have no role in the playoffs other than a slag arm if we're getting blown out.
