OMG are they trying to get Holmes the blown save record? It may not seem like it, but Clay Holmes notches his 30th save on the season, which is good for 7th in MLB and 4th in the AL.

At least Holmes didn't blow the last game. Now it's time for the season to start. Yankee Playoff Baseball.

Cruz takes a slider inside, ball 1. Huge hack at a slider dropping to the knees, inner half, helmet comes flying off and he misses under. Sinker MAYBE brushes the inside corner up in the zone, Gameday says 0% by an inch, so Holmes got a break there. Slider inside, lays off, 2-2 Slider to the low outside corner, perfect location, swung over for the K, game over, Yanks win, 6-4!
Yanks finish the regular season at 26 games over .500, 94-68 and win the East by 3 games.
Next game is game 1 of the AL Division Series, Saturday 10/5, at the Stadium, time to be determined, but I'd be surprised if it isn't an early evening game. The Royals won and the Tigers lost, so the Yanks have a tough test in the opening round, it'll be either the Astros or the Tigers, who fell to 3rd wild card by losing their last game to the White Sox, of all teams, while the Royals beat the Braves. Royals beat Detroit, 7-6 in the season's series, so they get the Orioles in the other Wild Card series.

our 94 wins were 3rd best in baseball. after a really good run when the games still mattered, the team was 12-4, kinda limped across the finish losing the final 2 series going 2-4 but the slate is wiped clean and we'll really see who this team is in this up & down season.

Good for him, I guess, and he does need the confidence boost for the post-season, but as for the stats, I offer the wise words of the legendary philosopher Coleman: "Whoop-de-damn-doo!"

a rather moribund effort from this spring training lineup as we "pounded" out 6 hits. will give potg to grisham for his HR in the 1st to start things and single to drive in another. honorables to gleyber who had 2 double and scored twice and verdugo, whose hit in the 8th provided the margin.
difficult day for schmidt but he was dealing with some nasty weather. will given an HM to bullpen for 5 shutdown innings (except for leiter).

94-68, not bad. Is it me, or did this season fly by? I swear that season opening sweep of Houston was last week.
On to the playoffs...

The Stars of the Game...Honorable mention to the entire bullpen except Fuse Leiter, who walked the tying run to 2nd and gave up the game-tying double to Bart (And by the way, ended Schmidt's run of no games allowing more than 3 runs in his 16th and last start of the season by allowing the inherited runner to score. Good work, Junior.). Good work by Mayza, Hamilton, Weaver (getting yet another positive outcome...the sequence in 8 straight games he's appeared in since he became closer is now save, hold, win, save, win, save, save and win) for the win, getting to 7-3, and a good 9th inning for Holmes getting the Pirates 1-2-3 for yes, his 30th save of the season.
3rd star of the game: Gleyber Torres again from the leadoff spot, 2 doubles, a walk, led off the game with a double and scored, doubled in the middle of the 2-run rally and scored again in the 3rd to give the Yanks the lead right back after Schmidt gave up 3 in the 3rd. In 39 games in the leadoff spot since August 16th: 51 for 164, 31 runs and 18 RBI, 7 doubles, 5 HR, 20 BB and 32 K, .311/.384/.451/.835 is a terrific line for a modern leadoff man, and I hope he can keep it up against the top pitching from the Astros or Tigers in the ALDS. Edit: in fact, that line looks quite a bit like the career like of another Yankee who hit leadoff a lot, but not as often as he batted 2nd, Derek Jeter. Jeter's career quadruple slash line: .310/.377/.440/.817.
2nd star of the game: Grisham, for breaking his usual pattern and jumping on a 1st-pitch fastball almost down the middle in his first at-bat, hitting a 2-run HR that gave the Yanks the early lead plus the RBI single in the 3rd that tied it up at 3 after the Pirates grabbed a 3-2 lead, and the usual superior play in centerfield. Just his 3rd game started this month, too.
1st star of the game...looked to be absolutely sleep-walking through another miserable performance, but hit the sharp grounder against a solid reliever in Mlodzinki that found a hole on the right side, driving in two to give the Yanks the winning margin. Any sign of life from him is good to see.
No stars for at least 6 days. I hope I can name three more on Saturday.
