Gerrit Cole starts game 1 for the Yanks. His seasoned was hampered by the early elbow injury, but he recovered well enough to finish 8-5 with a 3.41 ERA. In 17 starts, he pitched 95 innings, allowing 78 hits, 38 runs, 36 earned, 11 HR, 29 BB and struck out 99. His WHIP for the season is a solid 1.126. Against the Royals in his career, Cole is 4-1 with a 2.77 ERA. In 52 innings, he’s allowed 38 hits, 18 runs, 16 earned, 6 HR, 11 BB and struck out 65. His WHIP against KC is an outstanding 0.942, although most of that took place when the Royals were a bad team. Cole was on the IL for the first series against KC and didn’t pitch in the 2nd one at the Stadium last month. His last start against the Royals was in July last year at the Stadium; Cole went 6 1/3 innings, allowing 5 hits, 2 runs (earned), 1 HR, 1 BB and struck out 10 in a no-decision that the Yanks eventually won, 5-2.
Cole has a very good, but not quite great, postseason record. In 17 starts, he’s 10-6 with an ERA of 2.93. In 104 1/3 innings, he’s allowed 73 hits, 37 runs, 34 earned, 18 HR, 26 Bb and struck out 134. His WHIP is a sterling 0.949. That post-season record is dominated by his brilliant run in 2019 for the Astros, where he whipped through the first two rounds, got hit early in the World Series, and came back and through a great game in game 5 on the road in Washington, sending the Astros back to Houston with a 3-2 lead…which they blew and lost the title. This is his 9th post-season start with the Yanks, and he hasn’t been quite as good for New York in the playoffs. 4-2 with a 3.49 ERA; in 38 2/3 innings, he’s allowed 32 hits, 17 runs, 15 earned, 9 HR, 10 BB and struck out 56 for a WHIP of 1.096 and a K/9 over 13. This is his first post-season start against the Royals.

Yesterday: No games for anyone. The Mets, Padres, Tigers and Royals all won their Wild Card Series on Wednesday or Thursday.
In the game earlier today, the Guardians got to opener Tyler Holton and bulk inning follower for 5 runs in the 1st, and coasted behind Starter Tanner Bibee’s 4 2/3 shutout innings plus 4 1/3 more scoreless innings by five relievers to a 7-0 romp, going up 1-0 in there Division Series against the Tigers. Relief phenom Cade Smith got the win in relief for his first post-season decision. Holton took the loss and is 0-1 in the playoffs.
The Mets and Phils are in a tight pitcher’s duel at Citizen’s Bank Park. The Phillies got 7 shutout innings of 1-hit, 9-K ball from their ace, Zack Wheeler. Kodai Senga came off the IL to pitch the first two innings for the Mets, gave up a leadoff HR to Kyle Schwarber, and that’s all the scoring in the game. Senga got through two, Peterson followed with 3 shutout innings, and Reid Garrett added two more to keep it 1-run game. Now it’s up to the Phillies pen to nail this one down in the last two innings against a Mets’ lineup that just refuses to die.
And just like that, 3 batters after Wheeler left, the Mets get a single, a walk and a double, and have tied the game at 1, and have the go-ahead and insurance runs in scoring position with nobody out. They are going to be a stone-cast beach to eliminate.
At 8:38 pm in LA, the Padres send Dylan Cease (14-11, 3.47 ERA) out to face Dodgers’ ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto (7-2, 3.00 ERA). You’ll remember Yamamoto came out on fire in his start on Sunday Night Baseball at the Stadium, throwing high 90s…before he hurt his arm.
And in 7 minutes at the Stadium, it’s Wacha vs. Cole. See you…now.

Massey in the box. Cole has finished his warmups. Game underway... FB inside middle at 97, hit high to deep right, Soto goes back, catches it a step or two from the wall, 1 down. Whew.

Here's the lineup! Oswaldo at 1B and Verdugo in LF. I would have preferred Rice and Martian but what can you do. As opposed to Mayza?

Witt takes a slider below and inside middle, 0-1 Takes a curve low, 1-1 Fb at the top, hit to deep left center, Judge on the dead run makes a terrific backhand catch in the gap, on the edge of the track, 2 down. 3-star play for Judge, and Cole fooling no one so far.
