Big Ben signs a one-year contract with the Steelers for one more run. The Steelers are in a major salary cap jam but they were expected to bring Ben back for another year.

Defense really had to watch for the fake back then. The Saints have parted ways with Jared Cook and Josh Hill (tight ends), as well as Morstead. The latter was expected. Thomas Morstead is the best punter in Saints history, but he’s getting expensive and he was really challenged last off season by a rookie punter: Blake Gillikin of Penn State. The Saints kept Gillikin on injured reserve (hiding him IMO) all last season. Gillikin had 53 punts inside the ten yard line at Penn State.

Is he the front runner to be the new Saints punter?

I felt Pastorini was clever to use the punt as a weapon on third down, but I wasn’t so sure that giving away a down was all that smart. But when the oilers would recover one it was a joyous occasion...

Drew Brees makes it official.

Drew Brees makes it official. Makes me profoundly sad. Brees was the best thing that ever happened to the Saints franchise. He deserved more than one Super Bowl. For so long, the Saints had lousy defenses to pair with wonderful offenses directed by Brees. Then, when the defense began to improve, they wouldn’t pull the trigger on a number two wide receiver to take the pressure off Mike Thomas. The Saints were screwed by officials in 2011 and the no call against the Rams. Both of those teams were better than the 2009 team that won it all. The Minneapolis Miracle was a fluke. Bounty Gate was a farce. Goodell made certain the Saints would be made an example. I’ll miss Brees in the two minutes before half-time: unstoppable. I never understood why they didn’t just run that hurry up offense at other times during the game.
