So, here's an interesting thought that popped into my head. Back the day, it was "Moneyball" and the high OBP player was the undervalued market that Billy Beane and his ilk liked to dabble in. Now that it seems that most baseball teams are eschewing the signing of older players, are they the new undervalued players? It would seem the Giants are gambling that they are. Unlike most teams, the Giants appear to be collecting the aged stars of other teams, getting some salary relief along with the players. Guys that are past thirty. Evan Longoria and now McCutcheon will join Johnny Cueto, Mark Melancon, Jeff Samardzija, Nick Hundley, Buster Posey, Pablo Sandoval, Gorkys Hernandez, and Hunter Pence as players born before '88 and therefore past 30 years of age...
If the Giants succeed, it will likely be with a short window. If they fail, the wait to get back to the top may be an excruciating one...

Sounds like the Giant's training staff is going to be really busy this summer.

They're probably at home now, practicing on some old Stretch Armstrong dolls so they're ready for the season...
I worked in a store that sold some toys when Stretch Armstrong came out, and the owner/manager made the mistake of unpacking one for display. One of the teens working in the store decided to test the limits of the "stretch" and finally, after a long struggle succeeded in pulling one of the arms off, followed by his head/neck. The material inside was an oozy, red "blood", very thick, that slowly drained from Stretch's wound for several days as the guys collected it into a ball. The ball could be stretched, or bounced. The same kid decided to take the ball outside on a very cold winter's day and throw it against a cement wall, whereupon it instantly shattered into tiny red chards that flew in every direction. We were not able to find the deposed body of Stretch Armstrong, and I for one am only happy the kid never got ahold of "Stretchen Gretchen", stretch's girl friend that came out a bit later...I shudder to think what may have become of her...
I think the Giants will suffer the same fate this season, but...who knows? If they all muscle up for that one last big year...LOOK OUT! If not, they shatter in a million pieces...

Tell us about the year all you got for Christmas was an orange...
Hmmm. Come to think of it, I think one year, we got an apple...Not the computer kind, either. It had a worm. That was the first meat we had in the house in weeks...
Just thinking about Stretch...he was like a training toy for bullies..."Let's pull his arm off". "No, a leg"! "Off with his head"! Quite gory looking too with the red gel oozing out...

If by any chance you had older brothers or your father drank a lot, I can pretty well tell you what happened to it. He wound up dismembered in a dumpster on the south side...No one wanted you to know until you were old enough. Now is the time... "The Night Stretch Armstrong Died"...

Pace of play has been one of the chief initiatives for MLB commissioner Rob Manfred since he succeeded Bud Selig, with a pitch clock among the potential rules changes most frequently discussed in recent months. Today, both Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (subscription required/recommended) and Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com are reporting that the Major League Baseball Players Association is expected to reject Manfred’s latest pace-of-play proposal, but that Manfred will likely exercise his power to unilaterally implement the new measure despite a failure to reach agreement with the union.

To whom does pace of play make the most difference? I should think the casual fan with little understanding of the game and a short attention span...The issue that bothers me the most is all the pitching changes and the length of the commercials during those changes...I know there are arguments against it, but I'd favor reducing the number of warm-up pitches for relievers during non-injury substitutions. Maybe that would lead to fewer mid-inning pitching changes...

What does anyone know about this kid, other than that he's Cuban? Is he considered MLB ready? Age? Style of player? All I know is a name, and I've already forgotten that...Oh, here it is...Julio Pablo Martinez...Sounds like Julio Franco mated with Pablo Sandoval and had a baby...
