To whom does pace of play make the most difference? I should think the casual fan with little understanding of the game and a short attention span...The issue that bothers me the most is all the pitching changes and the length of the commercials during those changes...I know there are arguments against it, but I'd favor reducing the number of warm-up pitches for relievers during non-injury substitutions. Maybe that would lead to fewer mid-inning pitching changes... I think all the catcher's trips to the mound needs to be reduced, they really hurt the pace and flow of the game.

That's an excellent idea. They have hand signals for a reason. If they can't keep them straight for the kind of money they're making, we should just see if we can teach orangutans to pitch and catch. I would imagine that the catchers visits could be treated like coaches challenges, managers visits, or time outs and place a limit on how many per inning so the catcher would think a bit before spending one...Think about it. The first time a catcher exceeds the number of allowed visits in an inning, the pitcher must be removed (damn, there goes a pitching change, don't like it)...so instead the batter is put on base via a no pitch walk. The second time the batter and all runners score. He gets no warning, the umpire simply keeps a tally of visits and enforces the rule...
Or we could just do the old rule from golf where if you don't hit the ball past the ladies tee, you have play the rest of that hole with your...oh, that one may not work...I actually had a player in my foursome once that wanted to enforce that "rule" on someone. Luckily, I had my rule book in my golf bag...I think that fellow needed a bit of help, to be honest...

What does anyone know about this kid, other than that he's Cuban? Is he considered MLB ready? Age? Style of player? All I know is a name, and I've already forgotten that...Oh, here it is...Julio Pablo Martinez...Sounds like Julio Franco mated with Pablo Sandoval and had a baby... Based on his present talent level, Martinez is ready for a high Class A or Double-A assignment. A lefty around 5-foot-10, 185 pounds, Martinez in his last season in Cuba hit .333/.469/.498 with 52 walks, 30 strikeouts and six home runs in 264 plate appearances with 24 stolen bases in 29 tries. Martinez has a promising combination of power, speed and athleticism in center field. In Cuba he was a plus runner from home to first, though he has shown even better in the 60-yard dash recently while working out for clubs. His strike-zone control isn't as sharp as his raw Cuban stats might suggest, but he has consistently performed at a high level both in the Cuban junior leagues and in Serie Nacional. He's a good low-ball hitter, with quick wrists, good bat speed and a strong lower half to generate power. While there is some swing-and-miss to his game, his strikeout rate should be manageable. His all-around skill set has some similarities to a shorter version of a younger Curtis Granderson, though Martinez is faster. Thanks for the assessment of the talent package, acura...It's easy to see why there is some excitement around this kid as a prospect...and also easy to see that he's no sure thing...

We all have some things that were buried in that "Great Dumpster" on our own personal south side. Sometimes we're better off never knowing. I remember a hand puppet that disappeared suddenly, the baseball cards of course, which made a quick exit when I turned 14 (why, mom...why?) because I was getting "too old" for things like that. Strange when we stop to think about the old toys we had and such. Where DID all those Tonka and Nylint trucks go? The little green plastic soldiers? Electric Football game? The old Monopoly and Clue games that we had? Electric race car sets that my older brothers used more than I did, until one of the motors was half burned up and only one car ran fast... . Maybe that dumpster is waiting for us on the other side of this life, and we get to sift through it all one more time... Sorry to read that your dad did some drinking. Mine left before I knew him. Sometimes I wonder which is worse for a boy...The man who lived in the other side of our duplex would drink every single night after work. The more he drank, the louder he got. Sometimes there were a lot of crashing noises over on their side of the wall. Then one day, he crashed his car into a concrete wall at the end of town. We used to hear him say he was going to that, so we know it was a suicide...

I know that's a stupid question as Shameless is part comedy... I guess all towns have a bad side. I hear in Pueblo it's on the east side...Luckily, we live several miles to the west of even the west side...It's quiet out here...for now. The city is growing again, and the cannabis folks are moving in on all sides. I'd rather have that than the illegal growers, so I hope the legal ones kind of push the others to another area...

A majority of the south side of Chicago is just residential neighborhoods, albeit poor neighborhoods. It's the gang occupied parts that you have to stay away from, especially at night. There's just no reason to ever be in those parts of the city but it's sad how much gun activity there's been. So many senseless killings and lives throw away.

Big Gary will love Frazier if he becomes a Met.

Nice that everybody is a good sport about this silly little side line...I seems that's the way Frazier comports himself on a daily basis. I was quite taken with his personality...

Ellsbury still a Yankee...
Giants Sign Austin Jackson
7:59pm: Jackson can boost his 2019 salary by up to $2.5MM if he meets certain plate appearance-based targets, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic tweets, so the escalator provision will not impact the Giants’ efforts to stay under the tax threshold for the coming season.
7:40pm: In a statement, Giants GM Bobby Evans acknowledged the agreement (via John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, on Twitter). He says that Jackson will “provide additional depth at all three outfield positions,” suggesting that the club does not expect to hand him the reins to the regular job in center.
6:13pm: The Giants have agreed to a contract with outfielder Austin Jackson, according to Jon Heyman of Fan Rag (via Twitter). It’s said to be a two-year, $6MM guarantee that also contains up to $2.5MM in additional potential earnings for the Octagon client.

So, with the Giants adding yet another player over 30 years of age, the question has to be asked. Is Austin Jackson one of those players that we need to say was "one that got away"? Well, for a couple of seasons, it looked like he might be. He played stellar defense for Detroit from 2010-2013 while hitting for a decent slash of .278/.344/.416, stealing 69 bases and cracking 38 triples while leading the lead in that department twice in that four year period. Since then, he's hit a rather ho-hum .270/.325/.383, stealing 42 with 14 total triples. His HR power has dropped from middling to below average, unless you believe the 7 HR and the .318 average from a half season last year to be the new norm for him.
No, he didn't get away. The Yankees saw something that made them feel as though he was not a part of the future in NY. He's not a bad player, but he's the kind that winds up on a Giants team that is trying to bounce off the basement with a very odd strategy. The kind of strategy that aims for veteran players who are not earning a bunch of money. And damn it, Austin Jackson easily won the battle with Ellsbury to become the final piece of the Giants OF...He's would NOT be a good fit on the Yankees had they signed him this season, and he would NOT have been a good fit for sure after 2013, if not before. He would have been another "Melky Cabrera", destined to be jettisoned. Perhaps we should ask if Melky is one that got away. Perhaps sometime in another post...

The Todd Father grew up and still resides in Toms River NJ... about 10 minutes from where I lived and grew up... so I've been a fan of him since his days with the Reds... and honestly, I would welcome him back to the Yankees... even if he is a "re-tread"
