I'm pulling for them because I love witnessing baseball history. I remember that 23-game streak by the 1961 Phillies very well. At a certain point the fans got into it and wanted them to keep losing. At one point they came back from a road trip when the streak was well along and there was a huge crowd to greet them at the airport as if they had just won the World Series. Thousands of people including a few friends of mine who asked me if I wanted to go but I was too focused on a great Yankees team and Mantle and Maris in the home run race to have time for such lowbrow nonsense! They showed it on TV and manager Gene Mauch came off last, looking confused and trying to figure out how to take it as he got a thunderous ovation. He got into it enough to reluctantly acknowledge the crowd. And how was the French Onion Soup? And the rest of the dinner? The French Onion soup was just average, but the rest of the dinner was pretty good. I had a 16 ounce ribeye medium rare and it was cooked to perfection with asparagus, king trumpet mushrooms, and fingerling potatoes. Also enjoyed some grilled octopus and steamed mussels. For desert had the creme brulee which was wonderful. Great company, great dinner, and a great birthday! I remember the 1960 Phillies with Manager Eddie Sawyer resigning after the 1st game of the NL season telling the Philadelphia sports media when Sawyer resigned, issuing the famous quote, “I am 49 years old and want to live to be 50.”

yeah that last pitch to machado was ridiculous. just caught the corner with movement. manny laughed and looked he was saying something like "wtf". the 6 pitches to manny were 101, 102, 103, 103, 105.1, 104.7. but he's the same old chapman w 4 blown saves in 8 tries. a not pretty whip of 1.430 because of his 7.2/9 walk rate. he does K 14.8/9. that last season with us he was struggling to hit 100 and his K rate was only 10.7. yeah where did he get it from ...

I never understand why they think it will. Problem is that you can't fire the owner ! Probably not a good idea to fill your organization with people that were recently let go from the Kansas City Royals.

I scouted around the internet looking for some good articles that try to explain what went so wrong with the Sox. Seems lots of stuff is behind paywalls. Any suggestions ?

Comcast Sports Chicago might have some articles in their archives about the stunning decline of the White Sox. www.nbcsportschicago.com/mlb/chicago-white-sox/It's probably a combination of events, like Tim Anderson's sudden dropoff from batting champion to DFA'd player looking for work, to some of their key young players, like Roberts, Jimenez and Yuan Moncada (remember him?) not being able to stay healthy. Hard to believe this team won 90+ games just three years ago.

I am typcal of lots of fans who thought the WS were on the path to a long run of succcess with the guys you mentioned and even a few more. I did wonder what the heck was going on when they brought back LaRussa, but as much as the guy annoys me I can't blame this all on him.

Younger versions of Carlos Rodon, Dylan Cease, Lance Lynn, Dallas Keuchel, and Lucas Giolito. That's a very good rotation at the time. Garrett Crochet, Reynaldo Lopez, Liam Hendricks, Michael Kopech and even Craig Kimbrel were part of their pitching staff. I do think the hiring of LaRussa set the team back but he's wasn't the biggest problem. They just had too many injuries and other players that never took the next step in their development.
