Like I said, tears the cover off the ball.

Touché, but inevitably the real season begins and he needs regular reps.

Why in the world would we need two first basemen when we have DJ available? Because only 0.16% of his professional innings have been at first base? And if both players prove they are valuable offensive players who can create more dynamic lineup options and rotation of players that would be more beneficial to the team than Luis Cessa or somebody pitching out of the bullpen once every two weeks?

I think Cessa will be in the rotation until CC or Severino come back. I hate these 13 man bullpens and I don't think they're good for the game, but until starting pitchers start going deeper into games, they are here to stay.

They need two guys right now. I hope it's German & Loisiaga but I think Cessa will gran one of the spots. How many innings do you guys think Loisiaga can go this year? That's going to be an issue.

Why in the world would we need two first basemen when we have DJ available? So we have a left handed power bat off the bench to pinch hit for DJ... (: So we have a third and emergency catcher to add to our passed ball totals while he injures a hamstring trying to catch... (: To play late inning defense at first base so we don't get pissed at Voit for making a ninth inning error that leads to a loss (Let Birdie do it!)... (: To give Jakie some company on the DL... (:

I don’t think Cash or Boone would agree with stashing one of Voit or Bird on the bench when we already have a built in DH in Stanton. I’d send Bird down to get regular reps. If Voit falters, you have a built in replacement. DJs .16% or whatever at first base would be superior to either Voit or Bird’s clunky defense.

Bird hits every ST. In fact, ground hog day for him would be great if it was always in March somewhere. Wade is the most versatile, and can actually play defense, unlike some of the others we decided we couldn’t exist without. Greg Bird hit .154 in spring training last year. Every other ST, then.

Greg Bird hit .154 in spring training last year. Every other ST, then. This is true but the issue he has had in the year's in which he has hit well in ST is injury (at least more-so), not lack of ability. Last year he had a bad spring and then couldnt perform. Who knows what to make of it right now but if he manages health, there is certainly value in the guy we saw in 2015 or the one who returned from injury in 2017. If he reverts to 2018 form then its easy enough to just get rid of him by sending him down.

It'll be Cessa and German, I think. I wasn't thinking it through when I said Loisiaga would get a spot. His 65 inning season last year doesn't translate into a starting role in MLB in 2019...If Cessa doesn't do well, we'll likely have to DFA him (thinks he's out of options)...But if he doesn't do well, that may be a good idea at that point anyway...

This is a good point about Loaisiga's innings history. I didnt realize he threw so few in 2017 too. Seems like adding one more arm as veteran depth would be beneficial.

Gio Gonzalez is still out there, but even if he signed this week, would be ready by the opening week of the season? As Yogi used to say, "it's getting late, early."

If they want to carry an extra pitcher anyways I wonder if adding a guy like Gio and having him split outings with the likes of a Cessa or Loasiaga or German would be a strategy they are interested in (looking to get 3 innings or so from a couple of guys).

I think a fair question about Gio is whether he is good enough to pitch in the AL east. They might not think so.
