Anyone have a clue if Otani could hit major league pitching? If Tanaka opts out, I could see the Yanks going after him as a replacement. The Yankees should go after him whether Tanaka opts out or not. Otani, since he would be coming early, won't be very expensive.

I wouldn’t sign someone just to be DH.
Depending on whether someone else sticks at 3B, they could have Headley there. They will likely still have Ellsbury and at times he hit well this year. They can have Austin on the roster to spell Bird.
Unless someone interesting becomes available on a 1 yr deal I wouldn’t devote the DH spot to a free agent.

I agree that I wouldn't want to sign a pure DH, but I feel we need someone who is a better option in that slot. I'd like to see another good-hitting catcher on the roster that fill that role, perhaps. I suggest Higashioka should get a long look in spring training. He and Sanchez could split the catching duties and DH, along with the days that Bird, Judge, Didi, even Gardner need a partial breather...Headley and Ellsbury don't scare anyone...

I don’t think there’s a good reason to believe that Higashioka can hit as well as Ellsbury or Headley will next year. If he can hit better than Romine they should trade one of them for prospects.

But then again, will he hit as BAD as those two? They'll be another year older...Ellsbury is likely to spend time on the shelf again, Headley had his best season since 2012...
