This is a fun team to watch. I realize we have played a favorable early schedule but who would have thought a month ago, with the injuries we have had, that we would have the record we have now. Cashman deserves a lot of credit for the offseason signings of LeMahieu and Ottavino and the pickups of Urshela, Maybin and others. Maybe Urshela is a flash in the pan but he sure has been the flash we needed. Now on to Tampa Bay!

Maybe Urshela is a flash in the pan but he sure has been the flash we needed. Now on to Tampa Bay! That flash you're seeing is the flash of leather. Every one of the pickups has either adequately replaced or improved the glove they're filling in for...What looked like a crappy defense the first couple weeks of the season is gelling into a fine, tight team...It'll be interesting to see what happens as people come back and changes are made to accommodate the returning heros, for instance...Torres back to second with the return of Didi...There may be a few mistakes until the regulars get their feet planted... It was amazing watching the Mariners play defense. It's not pretty...We are fortunate. Defense is one of the new "Money Ball" aspects of the game. With Tampa next on the agenda, watch those guys. They are also playing "new Money Ball". They're playing good D and the aspect they're buying on the cheap is contact on offense...Not a lot of K's. And the pitching is very good. The starters all have BA against between .197 and .228. Nobody is getting a lot of hits off that group... |
