The “Opener” fad officially jumps the shark now that the Yanks have jumped on board.

Openers. Maybe the idea is to let Adams pitch but not have him start the game. I don’t know. I think most of the changes we are seeing based on data analytics are smart but I don’t get this one.

Teams usually use a reliever that's throwing the ball well as an opener. We got someone with a 14 ERA.

Right. The strategy is to let the opposing team jump start their offense before the Yanks ever even come to the plate. That takes a special kind of genius...
Actually, I give the Yankees “credit” for starting this fad back when Brian Bruney got the ball for the first couple of innings. Remember that one?...
Bruney “started” and went two innings on April 9, 2008. He threw 2-hit shutout ball with four strikeouts to no avail as the Yanks failed to score and lost the game 4-0 to KC...

Green didn't pitch well in that first inning but the Rays stupid decision to have Meadows try to steal 2nd base helped keep the inning scoreless.

Cortes coming in next really makes this a dubious strategy. Cortes is demonstrably the worst pitcher on their staff. If he comes in next I question whether the Yankees know what they’re doing.

Maybe Green is actually the closer today because our chances of winning are closing quickly.

Green gives up two HRs back to back.

And now Green nails Robertson in the head.

Green's first inning luck runs out in the 2nd.

And here comes Cortes right on cue. Really sketchy strategy today for Boone or Cashman or whoever had this bright idea. Opener is a guy who has been so inconsistent this season we had to send him down and just came back. Following him is the team’s worst pitcher a guy barely in the majors. In a game where we are competing for first place. What the actual fuck?
