Well at least the Red Sox blew a 5-2 lead in the ninth as the Indians rallied for 5 runs to win 7-5.

Who knew that ex-Yankee Kirby Yates would become known as a "lights out closer"? Says something about closers.

When his splitter is working, he's dominating and when it isn't he's very hittable.
The pitch Machado hit wasn't even close to a strike but the HR was a meatball splitter that didn't move. A splitter that doesn't move over the middle of the plate is also known as a batting practice fastball.
I think you take the good with the bad with Tanaka at this point. Overall, he's still a very good pitcher, but there are going to be days like this (or in this case innings like this) where he can't find command of the split and it is going to hurt.

Yup, the split is critical to his success. Maybe he can rely on his slider or sinker more when the split isn't working? I'm no pitching coach.

What happened to the knucklecurve he was trying out in Spring Training?

What happened to the knucklecurve he was trying out in Spring Training? Guess he threw it, and it flew over the fence...never to be seen again. Odd how that inning went. Lead off guy reaches on an error. Next guy hits behind him and against the shift. With no one on, maybe he doesn’t try to go to right. It was a rare instance where Tanaka failed to limit the damage on a HR ball, and DJLM’s error sort of set the tone for it...

Not sure he would have thrown out the runner on that play, even if handled. The broken bat flare and the other infield hit didn’t help his cause. Tanaka hasn’t had the best defensive efforts in his starts this season.

But what we CAN be certain of is that if Urshela was at third, he would have made the play look easy as he cartwheeled toward the ball and flipped it quickly to first while standing on his head and spinning...
