Which way will Tanaka choose? The overall stats he posted were not great, and that would suggest that he'll exercise his option and stay in NY. His performance down the stretch was good, and his post-season work was exemplary. Both of those issues suggest he might opt out and take his chances. Three years and $67 million and his Yankee identity are at stake.
Here are the reasons he'll leave:
Human nature tends to be greedy, and he'll believe he can make more money on the open market.
Joe Girardi has been fired. He doesn't know who the manager will be in NY.
The way he finished the season will tempt some GM into making a silly offer.
He doesn't care what team he plays for, he's all about the money.
Here are the reasons he'll stay:
He'll be concerned that no one will offer him as much money because of his known elbow condition and the lackluster over-all stats in 2017.
Joe Girardi has been fired. He doesn't know who the manager will be in NY.
GM's can't be so dumb as to let a short stretch of pitching at the end of the season and the post season tempt them to over-spend, can they?
He wants to be a New York Yankee, and there is a certain pride to that in his home country.
All of that considered, I think he decides to stay in NY. I hope he remains healthy... I know if I were a GM, I wouldn't take the foolish risk of over-paying him to watch my team play for a couple of seasons...

I would be shocked if he didn’t opt out. That doesn’t mean he will leave, but his value on the market is definitely more than what’s left on his current deal. I still hope they can keep him but he’d have to take less than his full value on the market for that to happen given the payroll goals of getting under the luxury tax threshold.

He's definitely opting out. Let him go. Though I will be sad to see him leave. So many photoshops.

If he opts out and gets more than the $67M left on his contract I'm more sickened than ever by the valuation put on the services of professional athletes. I think I liked it better when they were treated more like the rest of us in this employer-offers-pay-take-it-or-leave-it world...At least we could afford tickets to the games and got to see them on TV for free...(albeit, only on the local channels that offered them)... (:

Hard to argue with those who believe he’ll opt out but who’s going to give a soon to be 29 yo with a partially torn UCL a 4-5 year deal at no less than 20 per?? If I’m Tanaka I stay put. Not sure where I stand. I’m ok either way I guess

Well, back then only the baseball players were getting "screwed", but then again...they didn't have to get real jobs like the rest of us, so they're unique talents were at least worth that. Now, the owners are still getting mega-rich, but so are the players and all the fans are getting screwed. So if we could have the few getting screwed then the millions would benefit... Nah, I know it's actually more sensible and logical to an extent the way it is today, but the money has become completely out of this world. It's really as close to a sin as you can have if you don't believe in heaven or hell. NO ONE should be paying what they pay for these sports. The tickets, concessions, advertising costs. I won't take this to the "children starving in Africa" direction...Oops, sorry I just did...but I think you get my drift...It's just guys having fun on a baseball field. It shouldn't be as important as it is when there's an idiot on the other side of the world getting his jollies playing with nuclear weapons and the leaders of the world are raping their own people to remain wealthy... But...oh well...It's just baseball...

I agree salaries are obscene but its better that the players get their money since they are the real attraction. It only really pisses me off when the Yankees waste money on a subpar player like Ellsbury since the money could be better used.

They’re the ones who deserve the money, more than ownership. It isn’t as if the money gets returned to the fans if Tanaka decides to take less than the market will pay him, it stays with Hal and Hank Steinbrenner. I can think of a lot better charities that two guys whose primary contribution to society was to be born rich.

I recently ran into a fellow who continually mentioned people like the Waltons of Wal-Mart fame and repeated over and over again how wrong our society is that their families are wealthy only because of the vagina they happened to "fall out of". He didn't say anything about the penis that made them, just the vagina...it was hilarious in a dark sort of way.
But that is one of the by-products of capitalism...Just saw a quick clip on the news yesterday about the dead celebrities that generated the most income in 2017. Michael Jackson led the pack, followed by Arnold Palmer. I suppose at least a fair number of Jackson's family at least participated in his act at some point. Although I've heard some stories about his father being a madman that created the act and pushed those kids so hard to become famous and make him money.
Leonard Cohen told the story of being born into music eloquently. I thought Tom Jones recent performance of the song was poignant...https://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/tomjones/towerofsong.html
Not one of Arnold Palmer's relatives ever helped him hit a golf ball, but they're all out there with their hands out...

I'd like to see Tanaka not opt out and stay with the Yankees but there's little chance of that happening. If he does opt out, I'd let him walk since I don't like the risk of giving him the 5+ year contract he'll be seeking.

Considering his injuries, if he does opt out I would not like to see us bring him back. We should go all in on Otani if Tanaka opts out, however.

Tanaka would be a fool not to opt out. And if he does or doesn't... we should still go after Otani. This MF'er needs to be wearing Pinstripes... but back to Tanaka, if he does opt out, which I think he will, I wouldn't re-sign him unless we give him another opt out in 3-4 years... and pray that he uses it..
