Patrick Teale suggested on the prospects forum that it's time to deal from the top of our prospects pile to get a really good established player or two to supplement what we have. It's a great idea in my book. Here are some names that I would love to have on our shopping list...
Freddie Freeman 1B (love Bird, but for Freeman, I'd be mighty tempted) Jonathon Schoop 2B (power and a great glove) Travis Shaw 3B (Does it all at 3B)... Marcell Ozuna LF (Move Garder to CF) Christian Yelich CF (maybe move him to LF and Gardner back to CF Mike Trout CF (yes, Mike Trout!).
SP- Robbie Ray (This hidden gem of a pitcher is starting to come out of hiding) SP- Yu Darvish (Why not?)

SP- Yu Darvish (Why not?) Darvish is a free agent, so you wouldn't have to trade for him.

And in that case, we could help the starting rotation without trading anyone, so unless we could get Robbie Ray, whom I would still rather have than Darvish...Let's stick to the starting eight...or nine if you count a DH...I'm so over prospect-hugging right now. We're going to need room in our system...new blood!!!

First question. Would you be willing to package Bird to get Freddie Freeman? If so, who else would you give up? I'm assuming the Braves would HAVE to be interested. The ages of the two are similar, Bird may have even more potential, plus we'd have to pile on a prospect or two to sweeten the deal.
Man, I'd be sick giving up Bird, but Freeman is already doing much of what we hope Bird can do...

Bird will outperform Freeman next year, imo. Do not Free the Bird!!

Well, I think that it's safe to say that no one here seems to be too high on the idea of doing anything that would mean that Bird would be displaced at first base. To be honest, that includes me. He's too intriguing at this point and I think he might even be a 45+ HR kind of player.
So, to change the subject here is easy. What if we moved to 2B, and we talk about moving Castro? Castro is not going to bring back a good 2B from anywhere, so we likely wind up trading him for...??? Prospects? A really good relief pitcher and a starting pitcher prospect with some high upside but a low floor? And THEN what? Who plays second base? Is it time to see if Tyler Wade can handle the position, maybe in a platoon with Torreyes? What do you guys think of Jonathan Schoop, who is on my shopping list? Would the Orioles lose him for a boat load of high end minor league talent? Would either team risk that trade? If not, what second baseman would you be thinking about? Is it already Torres time in NY???

There's no point trading away all that minor league talent in order to get Schoop when we already have Castro and Torres.

There's no point trading away all that minor league talent in order to get Schoop when we already have Castro and Torres. Where does Tyler Wade fit in on the team? Would you consider an all-out competition between him and Torreyes for the inf and rare OF utility role, or do you stick with Torreyes??? This is the problem I'm finding with my shopping list at about every position. We ARE so in love with our prospects, and the success of recent promotions is really making us believe in them...perhaps too much??? The trouble is, that even though I am making these suggestions, I can't feel committed to them myself... I can't even commit to dealing Gardner to make room for a kid, because Gardner has become so much of a team leader. Of course, I can get behind losing Ellsbury...but that's probably the hardest chore for Cashman at this point... So, if we're going to trade anyone...it almost has to be for a starting pitcher or two...maybe an extra reliever...longshot, maybe we add a DH, but even then...do we NEED one??? The pitching staff over-performed a bit last season, and that makes it hard to do upgrades there. Can CC repeat his second half performance? Can we really rely on Montgomery? What was the deal with Gray last year? Was it just first-year Yankee jitters? Yes, there are some question marks on that staff...And the only pitchers I really want are Darvish and Robbie Ray. Ray is going to be a hard get...I have no idea what Ohtani may mean to the pitching staff...or to the offense for that matter...So much to think about, but only Cashman and the Steinbrenners can choose the direction... One final question though...If we don't trade away some of the minor league talent...what WILL we do with it all? The future says we will need a second baseman and a third baseman in the near term (1-2 years), likely a LF and a CF. That's about it...Should we try to trade some MLB talent to downgrade the K's and upgrade contact hitting??? ((((Head spinning))))...

Is it Otani or Ohtani? I've seen it both ways.
