I never realized what a great player Mike Schmidt was... of course, he retired when I was 3 years old... lead the league in HR 8x, 3 MVPs, retired with a 147 OPS+... I think he's pretty under rated that people don't talk about him more...

OPS+ 147 for his career. And pick it, you say? He had no equal in the NL...I was thrilled when he was able to nab a third MVP award at age 36. He had even been left off the All-Star team the year before despite having a fine season at .277 with 33 HR, so he kicked it up another notch the next year, and even maintained the same offensive level at age 37 the following year though without much MVP support. I think it had finally come to pass that year that his defense was beginning to slip, and the Phillies dropped to 80-82, which didn't help, either...OBP was just starting get recognized more and his lifetime .380 mark is a good one...

Schmidt was one of the most popular players in the league during the late 70's and early 80's, especially in PA. That was a great time for baseball in the North East. The Yankeees won the WS in '77 & '78, the Pirates in '79 and the Phillies in '80.
