footwork?....that's the usual culprit on wild throws to first........I think that is Betances' problem on throwing to bases, as well........Did the Yankees not insist that he work on holding runners when he was coming through the system? there are so many ways of slowing the running game....you know them as well as I...holding the ball a long time...varying the time of delivery...stepping off...varying the look-at-runner glances... besides the throw overs, and fake throw overs.......I don't see Betances use any of those things..........Shame on him, and shame on the Yankees for letting him get this far with the worst runner-holding skills ever seen..... I would guess that the running game skills suffered because Betances was so huge and they had to work on his mechanics to get him throwing strikes. In 2012, when he had an ERA of 6.44 and allowed 144 hits and 99 walks with 20 wild pitches in 131.1 innings, I figured he'd never make the majors. The conversion to reliever of course saved his career when he began to throw an adequate number of strikes (until 2017 when things went awry again). It seems he may have a problem with mental focus, and that he can't think about more than one thing at a time...It would be a shame if he can't overcome that, for it appears his career has become dependent on it... you're probably right....they may have worked with him, saw that it wouldn't wasn't possible for him for whatever reason, and pushed him through hoping for the best.........I am hopeful that somehow he can hold runners better, but realistically I fear for his future as a viable reliever.....

What the hell happened? I think it was a glitch by Yahoo with the game being rained out the day before and the Yankees playing yesterday but we're supposed to have the day off... The day of the rain out Didi was in my lineup and no matter what I tried it wouldn't let me put him on the bench and he was the only one it wouldn't let me do it to. I made sure the next day he was in my lineup and never actually checked my lineup yesterday since I set it up the day before. Regardless I'm still wining the series this week... But I'm still pissed with how they have scoring set up. I've never seen scoring set up like this. You get one point each for having the best average... Home runs... RBI.. IP... ect ect at the end of the week. Instead of how it's been ever other time I played every every day each player would have their own points... Like day someone had 2 homers.. a double.. and 8 RBI... they'd get 8 points for the homers (4 each) two points for double.. and 8 points for RBI so they'd have 18 points on the day.. I liked that scoring better...

I'm the commissioner of a fantasy football league that's been running for 10+ years though.

Here's a tidbit I discovered. It's well known that Steve Carlton's 1972 season was remarkable in comparison to the awful record of his Phillies team that played to a 59-97 record...
When you look at the other members of the starting staff, here are the records of all starters on the team that started at least 9 games.
Steve Carlton .730 (27-10) Twitchell .357 (5-9) Woodie Fryman .286 (4-10) Billy Champion .222 (4-14) Dick Selma .182 (2-9) Ken Reynolds .118 (2-15) Jim Nash .000 (0-8)
So that means the rest of the "regular" starters accrued a remarkable combined record of 17-65, or a .207 winning percentage...Only four pitchers on the entire staff other than Carlton accumulated records that were at .500, with none of them above and since three of them were 1-1, they don't merit mention. The second leading winner on the staff made 6 starts and relieved 36 times and finished at 7-7. Congratulations to Bucky Brandon...Sellma, Reynolds, and Nash in their combined 41 starts and 47 relief appearances (36 by Selma) totaled an unbelievably horrid 4-31 record...

The amazing career of Mike Fiore:
Minor league stats year age ave. BB HR OBP SLG 1963 18 .268 118 7 .431 .414 (in Mets system this season only, then drafted by Orioles) 1964 19 .275 143 25 .429 .462 1965 20 .320 121 24 .471 .541 1966 21 .269 88 15 .423 .479 (promoted to AAA) 1967 22 .206 30 5 .337 .338 (apparent injury season, only 53 games) 1968 23 .271 67 19 .390 .489 (promoted to parent Baltimore Orioles, went 1 for 17 with 4 BB) 1969 24 .274 84 12 .420 .428 (selected by the Royals and played 107 games for them, all in MLB, his OPS was 138+)
So, he fought his way through the minors, sort of trapped in Baltimore's farm system, then emerges as a darned good player in 1969. So then, why did he go 31 for 217 (.143) for the rest of his career? And with only 1 more HR? He walked 40 additional times, sort of true to form. You'd have to think the Royals thought they had their first baseman for the next ten or so years after that 1969 season. In addition, Fiore was athletic enough to play in CF in 9 games plus an additional 9 games in the OF corners...He even stole 20+ bases each of his first three minor league seasons...

There's really no place to post these tid bits on the free side at Scout...er...24/7 as they like to be called now...anymore...There are so few readers that you might as well post them on your own refrigerator...Which I do sometimes...which Ruthie doesn't like much...So she takes them down and puts up my crayon drawings instead...

Unfortunately I've forgotten what thread Utah and I were discussing Betances and his inability to hold runners on base...so I'll throw this in here...
A couple of guys that do an awful job with runners on base, but have been successful starters are Jon Lester and Jake Arrieta.
Career numbers for Lester 208 stolen bases allowed 86 CS. Worst season was 2015 at 44/11. He's had 27 pick-offs in his career, but only 3 since 2011. for Arrieta 131 /28 Worst season was 23/3 in 2016, but he's had several similar seasons to that. He's only picked off 4 runners in his career, two of which were in his rookie season. for Betances 63 /11 Worst season was 21/0 in 2016. He's only picked off one runner. for Pettitte 189 /92 He had 98 pick offs, 57 of which were picked off attempting to steal and included in the CS and Pick off stats. Only averaged 10.5 SB and 5 CS per season...I would venture to say that most attempts vs. Pettitte were by the best of base thieves...
I would like to find out more about this subject from a historical perspective, but have found research to be tough going on the old timers...

Oh, here's one...Tom Seaver. 409 SB / 164 CS. Only 14 pick-offs in his entire career, none of which were picked off attempting to steal...I remembered him being quoted as not caring about the base runners, he was after the hitter. His worst season was 1983 with 50 SB / 4 CS...He did get one of his pick offs that year, though. Yay, Tommy!!!

It's the dog, I swear it is. She's talking to HERSELF...She's also the one that farted in the room. (Really...ever had a mastiff? They can run you out of a room fast...150 pounds and with a scent gland on the anus...that is deadly!)...
