Anyway, who would call anyone they cared about "Bots"? See, it still works, lol... From a bit of research it appears that growing up in an Italian neighborhood in the Bronx he was nicknamed Boombots as in "Ehhhh...look at Vinnie Boombots over 'ere". That was then later shortened to just "Bots". Thanks for continuing the research, Bleed! I feel honored to have anyone take interest in these little stories, and I truly do like learning about the guys no one knows much about...

I could have sworn it was this thread.. but I obviously guessed wrong. You brought up Ed Whitson... which is weird.. I never heard of the guy before. But the other day, I was reading comments on another website and they were talking about him. Conversation started because he signed as a FA with the Yankees on December 27 1984 so they were talking about it because of the anniversary. (For all I remember, that's how it was brought up here) But anyways it was still ironic.

It was me that brought him up...I think it was on scout. I know that someone else joined in and then I posted an article about the fight Whitson and Billy Martin had...
He was one of the worst personality and emotional misfits the Yankees ever signed. Got bombed as a Yankee and was decent on about 5 or 6 other teams...

He will also always be remembered for kicking Billy Martin's ass.

I wonder how many people that hated Whitson for his pitching cheered him for whipping Martin???
