INF/OF Jazz Chisholm Jr. (left elbow sprain)Expected return: Late August
Chisholm took onfield batting practice on Aug. 21st, and he has been fielding grounders at 3rd base for several days, aiming to return in the minimum 10 days. Yankees Manager Aaron Boone has characterized that timetable as optimistic, though he said on Aug. 22nd that Chisholm “is real close to a return.” Chisholm was scheduled to face high-velocity pitching on Aug. 22, and Boone said that he might not need to play in a Minor League rehab game before being activated. Chisholm said he has experienced no pain since injuring his left elbow on an Aug. 12th slide into home plate against the White Sox. He was placed on the 10-day IL on Aug. 14th after an MRI revealed the sprain. (Last updated: Aug. 22nd)
RHP Ian Hamilton (right lat strain)Expected return: September
Hamilton is scheduled to begin a Minor League rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset on Aug. 23rd. He faced hitters on the field at Yankee Stadium on Aug. 20th, tossing 2 innings of live batting practice. Hamilton is recovering from a lat injury sustained on June 16th. He resumed a throwing program during the week of July 7th after dealing with a more minor version of the same injury earlier in the season. (Last updated: Aug. 22)
RHP Luis Gil (lower back strain)Expected return: September
Gil exited an Aug. 20th start against Cleveland with lower back discomfort. He was re-evaluated on Aug. 21st and placed on the 15-day injured list, though Manager Aaron Boone characterized the injury as “minor.” The Yankees hope to keep Gil active with bullpen sessions and possibly live batting practice before he is activated. 60-DAY INJURED LISTRHP Cody Poteet (right triceps strain)Expected return: September
Poteet began a Minor League rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset on Aug. 20th, tossing 2 innings (34 pitches) at Portland. He is expected to continue pitching with the Patriots this coming weekend, with an outing set for Aug. 25th at Portland. Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman has said the organization expects Poteet to be a potential depth piece late in the season. He last pitched in the Majors on June 12th at Kansas City. INF Jon Berti (left calf strain)Expected return: September
Berti is scheduled to begin a Minor League rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset on Aug. 23 at Portland. He has been recovering from a left calf strain sustained on May 24, including a reaggravation during the All-Star break in July. Berti was transferred to the 60-day IL on June 12 and has received at least two platelet-rich plasma injections to speed healing. (Last updated: Aug. 22)
1B Anthony Rizzo (right forearm fracture)Expected return: September
Rizzo batted against live pitching on the field at Yankee Stadium on Aug. 20th and Aug. 21st, continuing to increase his workload as he recovers from an injury sustained while running the bases on June 16th in Boston. Rizzo has also been fielding grounders and throwing, and he is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset the weekend of Aug. 23rd. He will DH. Manager Aaron Boone said on Aug. 20th that Rizzo “feels really good,” and that while Rizzo is performing exercises at full strength, his arm still needs to continue healing to protect the bone against a fall. RHP Clarke Schmidt (right lat strain)Expected return: September
Schmidt is slated to begin a Minor League rehab assignment on Aug. 23rd with Double-A Somerset at Portland, during which he is expected to throw approximately 40-45 pitches. If all goes well, Schmidt could return to the big leagues during the 2nd week of September.
“I feel really good, so hopefully it’s not too many [rehab games],” Schmidt said. “I’m definitely really excited to get back in games.”
Schmidt resumed his throwing program on June 24th following a May 29 MRI, taken after he reported difficulty bouncing back from his most recent start. He was examined by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles on May 30th. Schmidt was placed on the 15-day injured list prior to the club’s May 30th game, retroactive to May 27th. RHP Lou Trivino (recovery from Tommy John surgery)Expected return: September
Trivino began a Minor League rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset on Aug. 14th. He made 1-inning appearances on Aug. 14th, Aug. 17th and Aug. 20th. His recovery from Tommy John surgery performed in May 2023 was stalled by a bout with right elbow inflammation in April. (Last updated: Aug. 21st)
RHP Clayton Beeter (right shoulder discomfort; No. 18 on Yankees top prospects list)Expected return: 2025
Beeter’s season is in jeopardy due to a right shoulder issue, General Manager Brian Cashman said on July 9th. Beeter is scheduled to see Dr. Keith Meister to determine the next steps in his treatment. Beeter last pitched for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on May 15th. RHP JT Brubaker (recovery from Tommy John surgery, oblique strain)Expected return: Possibly September
Brubaker sustained an oblique injury while making a fielding play during his July 11th Minor League rehab start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and has been shut down from baseball activities. He is not expected to resume throwing until mid- to late August. The injury interrupts Brubaker’s recovery from Tommy John surgery performed on April 12, 2023. OF Everson Pereira (right UCL tear; No. 10 on the Yankees top prospects list)Expected return: 2025
Pereira underwent reconstructive Tommy John surgery with an internal brace in early June, manager Aaron Boone said on June 14th. Pereira had been playing through the injury at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, last appearing for the RailRiders on May 14th. Boone said Pereira’s injury was “unfortunate,” but that similar to Jasson Domínguez, it is one the organization expects him to bounce back from. “This isn’t something that’s going to hurt his career too much," Boone said. RHP Jonathan Loáisiga (right UCL tear)Expected return: 2025
Loáisiga said on April 6th that he has a torn UCL and needs season-ending surgery. Dr. Keith Meister will perform the procedure, which Loáisiga said has an estimated recovery time of 10 to 12 months. Loáisiga was placed on the 60-day injured list on April 5th, retroactive to April 4th. (Last updated: April 6th)
