From MLB Rumors 8/23/24
Yankees Reinstate Jazz Chisholm By Anthony Franco | August 23, 2024 at 9:55am CDT
August 23: The Yankees have now made it official by announcing Chisholm’s reinstatement.
August 22: The Yankees will activate Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the injured list tomorrow, reports Andy Martino of SNY (on X). New York optioned INF Oswald Peraza back to Triple-A this evening to open an active roster spot.
It’s a remarkably quick turnaround. Chisholm’s season initially looked as if it could be in jeopardy when he damaged the UCL in his left (non-throwing elbow) a couple weeks ago. The Yankees quickly made clear they expected Chisholm back this year, although they didn’t anticipate this level of progress. As recently as last Friday, New York’s big deadline acquisition was reportedly targeting a return at some point in September.
Barring a last-minute change of plans, Chisholm will instead get back on the diamond after a minimal stint. He’ll draw back in at 3rd base, where Peraza and Oswaldo Cabrera have split the work over the last week and a half. That could be a significant boost to the New York lineup. Chisholm had been on an absolute tear early in his tenure in the Bronx. He already has 7 HRs with a .316/.361/.702 slash in 14 games as a Yankee.
Chisholm isn’t the only player who should soon return to the Yankee infield. Anthony Rizzo and Jon Berti are each scheduled to begin rehab assignments in the next few days (per the MLB.com injury tracker). Berti is headed to Double-A Somerset tomorrow; Rizzo is expected to join him there at some point this weekend. Position players can spend up to 20 days on a minor league rehab assignment.
Both Berti and Rizzo are on the 60-day injured list and have been out for multiple months. The former has only played in 17 games since the Yankees acquired him from Miami in a trade around Opening Day. Berti has been out since late May after suffering a significant strain in his left calf. Rizzo broke his right arm in a collision with Red Sox pitcher Brennan Bernardino in mid-June.
The Yankees called up 25-year-old Ben Rice to handle the majority of the first base work after that. Rice has struggled in his 1st look at MLB pitching, running a .180/.279/.374 slash. The rookie had a 3-HR game against Boston last month but only has 4 longballs in his other 44 contests.

Injuries & Moves: Yanks add bullpen, outfield depth as rosters expand 17 minutes ago
LATEST NEWS
Sept. 1: 1B Anthony Rizzo reinstated from 60-day injured list; RHP Ron Marinaccio, RHP Scott Effross and OF Duke Ellis recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre; LHP Josh Maciejewski designated for assignment
Rizzo, who had been sidelined since June 18th with a right forearm fracture, was activated as rosters expanded from 26 to 28 players. Rizzo started in the series finale against the Cardinals at Yankee Stadium, batting 7th and playing 1st base. Ellis will be used primarily as a pinch-runner and a defensive replacement in the late innings. Effross, who is returning from Tommy John surgery and back problems, appeared in 21 games with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and had a 3.75 ERA with 22 strikeouts. Marinaccio is in his 5th stint with the Major League club and has a 2.53 ERA in 14 games with the Yankees. Maciejewski appeared in 4 games with the Yankees and allowed 2 runs in 7 innings.
Aug. 31: RHP Ian Hamilton scratched from Minor League rehab outing Hamilton had been scheduled to throw 25-30 pitches on Friday for Double-A Somerset, but he was unable to take the mound due to back spasms. Yankees Manager Aaron Boone said that “it doesn’t seem like a major thing,” and that Hamilton could play catch on Saturday at Yankee Stadium.
10-DAY/15-DAY INJURED LIST
RHP Luis Gil (lower back strain) Expected return: September Gil is scheduled to begin a Minor League rehab assignment on Sept. 1st, Manager Aaron Boone said. It will mark his 1st game action since he exited an Aug. 20th start against Cleveland after 3-plus innings with lower back discomfort. He was re-evaluated on Aug. 21st and placed on the 15-day injured list, though Manager Aaron Boone characterized the injury as “minor.” Gil completed a bullpen session on Aug. 25th without issue and he threw around 65 pitches in a live batting practice session with Double-A Somerset on Aug. 27th. (Last updated: Aug. 30th)
60-DAY INJURED LIST
RHP Ian Hamilton (right lat strain) Expected return: September Back spasms forced Hamilton to be scratched from a scheduled Minor League rehab appearance for Double-A Somerset on Aug. 30th. Though Yankees Manager Aaron Boone said that “it doesn’t seem like a major thing,” the setback affects Hamilton’s chances of being activated when rosters expand on Sept. 1st. Hamilton was nearly untouchable during his 1st 2 rehab outings with Somerset, racking up 6 strikeouts across 2 1/3 scoreless innings on Aug. 24th and 27th. Boone said on Aug. 28th that Hamilton won't necessarily need to pitch in back-to-back games to be activated. Hamilton is recovering from a lat injury sustained on June 16th. He resumed a throwing program during the week of July 7th after dealing with a more minor version of the same injury earlier in the season. (Last updated: Aug. 31st)
INF Jon Berti (left calf strain) Expected return: September Berti will continue to play in Minor League rehab games through Sept. 1 and will play “a handful of days next week, too,” manager Aaron Boone said on Aug. 30th. Berti returned to action on Aug. 24th with Double-A Somerset and went 3-for-19 (.158) with 1 HR through his 1st 7 games. He has been recovering from a left calf strain sustained on May 24th, including a reaggravation during the All-Star break in July. Berti was transferred to the 60-day IL on June 12th and has received at least 2 platelet-rich plasma injections to speed healing. (Last updated: Aug. 30th)
RHP Clarke Schmidt (right lat strain) Expected return: September Schmidt is scheduled to toss a side session on Aug. 31, at which time the Yankees will decide if he should make another Minor League rehab start. General Manager Brian Cashman has said that the club expects Schmidt to be ready during the 2nd week of September. Schmidt has made 2 Minor League rehab starts, allowing 1 hit (a solo HR) over 3 2/3 innings on Aug. 23 with Double-A Somerset, then pitching 3 innings of 1-run ball for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Aug. 28th. Schmidt resumed his throwing program on June 24th following a May 29 MRI, taken after he reported difficulty bouncing back from his most recent start. He was examined by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles on May 30th. Schmidt was placed on the 15-day injured list prior to the club’s May 30th game, retroactive to May 27th. He was transferred to the 60-day injured list on June 18th. (Last updated: Aug. 30th)
RHP Lou Trivino (recovery from Tommy John surgery) Expected return: September Trivino had his Minor League rehab assignment transferred from Double-A Somerset to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Aug. 29. Trivino made five appearances in Double-A, permitting one run and three hits over five innings (1.80 ERA) while walking two and striking out five. Trivino began that rehab assignment on Aug. 14th, with Manager Aaron Boone saying on Aug. 25th that Trivino’s repertoire “continues to improve each time.” Boone said that Trivino was initially “a little slow coming back,” but there has been “steady improvement in his stuff and the crispness and the quality.” Trivino’s recovery from Tommy John surgery performed in May 2023 was stalled by a bout with right elbow inflammation in April. (Last updated: Aug. 30th)
RHP Cody Poteet (right triceps strain) Expected return: September Poteet continued his Minor League rehab with Double-A Somerset on Aug. 30th. He began his assignment on Aug. 20th. Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman has said the organization expects Poteet to be a potential depth piece late in the season. He last pitched in the Majors on June 12th at Kansas City. (Last updated: Aug. 30th)
RHP Clayton Beeter (right shoulder discomfort; No. 18 on Yankees top prospects list) Expected return: 2025 Beeter’s season is in jeopardy due to a right shoulder issue, General Manager Brian Cashman said on July 9th. Beeter is scheduled to see Dr. Keith Meister to determine the next steps in his treatment. Beeter last pitched for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on May 15th. He was moved to the 60-day injured list on July 23rd. (Last updated: July 23rd)
RHP JT Brubaker (recovery from Tommy John surgery, oblique strain) Expected return: Possibly September Brubaker sustained an oblique injury while making a fielding play during his July 11th Minor League rehab start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and has been shut down from baseball activities. He is not expected to resume throwing until mid- to late August. The injury interrupts Brubaker’s recovery from Tommy John surgery performed on April 12, 2023. He was acquired from the Pirates on March 29th. (Last updated: July 21st)
OF Everson Pereira (right UCL tear; No. 10 on the Yankees top prospects list) Expected return: 2025 Pereira underwent reconstructive Tommy John surgery with an internal brace in early June, Manager Aaron Boone said on June 14th. Pereira had been playing through the injury at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, last appearing for the RailRiders on May 14th. Boone said Pereira’s injury was “unfortunate,” but that similar to Jasson Domínguez, it is one the organization expects him to bounce back from. “This isn’t something that’s going to hurt his career too much," Boone said. "He should come back full strength from this.” (Last updated: June 15th)
RHP Jonathan Loáisiga (right UCL tear) Expected return: 2025 Loáisiga said on April 6 that he has a torn UCL and needs season-ending surgery. Dr. Keith Meister will perform the procedure, which Loáisiga said has an estimated recovery time of 10 to 12 months. Loáisiga was placed on the 60-day injured list on April 5th, retroactive to April 4th. (Last updated: April 6th)
