The free agent market sure is moving slowly, especially for the top-end players. Is this the year that teams are finally getting the message that long-term, high-dollar deals often sour? So far, no one has gotten longer than three years...Wade Davis got three years at $52M and Carlos Santana got three years at $60M...others have gotten modest or shorter term deals...
Where are the suitors for Jake Arrieta? Lorenzo Cain? Alex Cobb or Yu Darvish, anyone? Lance Lynn and J.D. Martinez are still waiting. The 38 home runs of Mike Moustakas is drawing no attention.
Which GM will be the first to cave in to temptation and hand out 5 years? Seven? What player will get those deals? Will anyone??? Will Darvish have to settle for less? Martinez and Moustakas, will they get rewarded with long-term deals?
Is this only because we have a "weak" market this year? I dunno, in some ways that would seem to make the GMs more desperate to sign the few truly big talents out there...

Teams like the Royals and Astros have shown you can win the World Series without these huge free agent contracts.

And some of the players and those juicy contracts have turned out to be albatrosses to the franchises that signed them...I've said for a long time that multi-year contracts should be very carefully considered before they're offered...Now the players will begin to cry collusion, and that cycle will have to be played out again...It's going to be interesting to see if the $400M/10yr. contracts for Machado and Harper actually happen next season...

This particular one was extremely homely, and to make matters worse her daddy bought her an Edsel, which she drove around in with primer for paint. Naturally, her knick name was "Edsel" as soon as she got the car. (God, I hope nobody on here says "that was my sister", LOL)...The joke used to be that the Edsel would pull into the local grocery parking lot and when it left the parking lot would empty out and everyone would follow her. One very odd thing that is the thing that doesn't match the others is that she could sing in a beautiful high soprano. Unfortunately for her, people would laugh while the poor homely child sang at the talent show because of her homeliness and the song choices. I remember her singing "I Feel Pretty"...I felt bad for her parents, sitting in the audience. Their sixteen or seventeen year old daughter in her nicest dress, singing to laughter. I wonder what went through their minds, or hers? But...she had her own brand of popularity...
Back in those days, I was a bass/baritone and did choral singing so I could be with the girls in the chorus. I "accidentally" made the all-county chorus, then made all-state. Once I got to the states, I was horribly out-classed because I couldn't read music...Now, I usually sing in a low tenor, but still have the chops to sing the opening of "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" in the same key as Bill Medley did it...perhaps a half octave lower, actually. No more performing for me though. Except in the shower...and you can't buy a ticket for that.
So, anyway...none of that mattered. I was a nerdish, pimple-faced kid that got scant attention from the girls, and found myself quite shy around them. It was years later that my dad told me he was so shy around girls when he was a teen that he couldn't hardly even speak to them. I could speak, they just didn't listen...

After a little bit of research.. it's no wonder I like that Edsel... it doesn't have the "toilet bowl" grille that most people made fun of them for.

Truth be told, it was a great car for that era that was poorly marketed...and the grille definitely did NOT help. (That was the model that JoAnn "Edsel" had BTW, the toilet bowl one). I'm thinking the one you're showing to be a '59. By then it was too late to save the species...
