When one plays only long shots, one can expect it to see many of his players miss the cut. One can also expect to be long-suffering in expectation of losing. I had a fellow tell me once (he was a big better on the horses), that in his estimation it was usually best in the long run to bet only the horses that were at the bottom of the top third of the field. In that position, he felt the odds were just long enough and the chances of a win were great enough to cash a ticket now and again. The addictive nature of the sport pushes people to want that alluring big check win of the long odds. Ignore the long odds and the short odds. You should win enough to break even or lose only modest amounts while perhaps having the good fortune of hitting a nice 7-1 or 10-1 check along the way for a decent payday. Do yourself a favor and peruse your bets for the past several tournaments and see what would have happened if you would have limited yourself to picking from the top 20-25th odds. Let’s see if you’d be better off... 😎

Thinking some more about the formulaic betting approach in the former post, I think I would personally follow that with a couple of twists. I would also take both the third shortest and third longest shots in the field. That would re-introduce the element of having one long shot, while also betting on a more likely winner that usually still has decent enough odds to at least give a decent shot breaking even, or making a small gain.
The problem of course is that this formula doesn’t allow “hunch bets”, unless you wish to give yourself permission to always add one, two, or three hunches...
