The “not so secret” agents are watching… Volpe and Duran would be decent gives for Gallo, but I suspect the Rangers will want a pitcher, too…

The good news is the Yanks have some impressive depth emerging in the infield, that'll allow them to transfer some in trades and still keep internal options. Now onto the important factors of deciding who to keep and who to give up.

So it sounds like Gallo could happen I guess.

So it sounds like Gallo could happen I guess. We have the guns in both pitching or middle infield. We need to do something…

“It’s July 20, and it feels like we have nothing but time on our hands right now; we’re gearing up for a frenzy on July 30,” one American League general manager said. “It’s a little unfortunate that it seems our industry gravitates so much toward those deadlines. I would expect this year to be no different.”
Oddly enough, a rental trade made five years ago may be having as big an impact on this year’s market as anything that has happened in 2021. The Cubs’ acquisition of Aroldis Chapman from the Yankees in July 2016 -- a deal that sent Gleyber Torres and three other players to New York for the closer and his expiring contract -- has become the gold standard of July moves, leaving some owners wondering where their Torres -- who was Chicago’s No. 1 prospect and a Top 25 overall prospect -- can be had.
---
I'm as guilty as anyone of glorifying the trade deadline, but these days it definitely feels like clubs just refuse to do much until late at the deadline when costs aren't as outrageous. Cashman did well to play off of the Cubs and Indians desperation of ending historical droughts, it's not gonna be like that every year for sellers.

If we could get Gallo without having to give up 2-3 or our top prospects I would feel more positive about trading for him. However I would wager Texas is going to want a haul. The fact that he is a left handed hitter with power is a real bonus but his 40% strikeout rate concerns me. Perhaps I look at a move like this differently than most. I don't see his addition as someone that could make the difference in us making the World Series this year but I do like the idea that his addition would be good for future years. I don't see much future for Andujar and I would guess Frazier and Gardner are done. Absent a prospect like Florial becoming an everyday player we seem to be thin in major league ready outfield prospects. Maybe I am wrong.

One thing about being rich in middle infield prospects as we’re are Is that those players tend to be among the more athletic players, and either the infield corners or the outfield can become fall back options. With Gallo having shown that he’s a 40- homer hitter in Texas, he may even threaten the 50 mark in YS. I wish we could expect him to mature into a solid .260 hitter in NY, but he is what he is. Florial has looked good this far. Gallo-Florial-Judge could make a nice combo over the next half dozen years…

Fair points Bear, well put. I'd like Gallo but he does add a lot of what we already have, power, K's, patience - now two of those three are immensely valuable and many fans/media forget that. I wonder if we should look at potential acquisitions in a sense of what we've missed due to departures and injuries. We lost athleticism in Didi, Hicks, both lefty hitters as well, Hicks obviously a switch-hitter. I'd love to add a few guys like Starling Marte in CF and Andrew Benintendi, both pretty athletic and can give our lineup a different dynamic from a non-slogging type of way and both are above average defenders. That's the way I'd like to see the Yanks go.

I am not suggesting that Allen is any kind of long term answer in the outfield but hasn't it been wonderful seeing his speed. Same thing with Florial. Other teams know when they are in the game and on base we are no longer a station to station team and it puts so much more pressure on the defense. I would hope we would concentrate on speed and athleticism in the off season, whether it be through free agency or from our own system.
