Odor should be a Wal-Mart greeter and and not a Yankee third baseman. [br I’m not sure he has the temperament for that… Ask Joey Bats…

I didn’t catch the start of the game. Joined in in inning 3. Then a two inning phone conversation in the 7-8 innings. Really didn’t get focused in. Too much going on around me, but I did see Judge’s home run. Actually I didn’t miss any scoring plays… pleasantly surprised at 15 K’s for Cole… I saw quite a few of them, but had no idea how many until the game was over…

Judge: .299 30 home runs 75 RBI Not bad. Outside shot of getting to 100 but should get to 90 which I didn't think anyone this season would.

Was out for dinner with a friend and missed the game, but did just watch the video of Cole's 15 strikeouts. It was important to end this losing streak and get back on the winning side again. Easy and drama free 9th for Chapman was also important. A day off and the Yanks can finally get some home cooking!

A 5-4 road trip at Atlanta, Oakland and Anaheim is certainly within the realm of the respectable.

In my lifetime, I have loved Whitey Ford, Mel Stottlemyre, Catfish Hunter, Ron Guidry, David Cone, Andy Pettitte, El Duque, CC and Gerrit Cole. Whenever they were on the mound, I always thought we would win. That's pretty much my list too, Desousa. In October I would add David Wells. He probably elevated his game in the post-season more than any Yankee pitcher I've seen. What about Mike Mussina? He's a HOF pitcher and obviously a great winning percentage. But I'm not sure I always felt as confident about a win, even though he usually did. Must be me. In his 17 seasons he never won fewer than 11 games. It's surprising, though, that in eight years with the Yankees he never made an All Star team. Jimmy Key wasn't with the Yanks long enough to make this list. But I alwats felt good about him being out there. He was 35-10 his first two seasons with the Yankees. His ERA+ in four years was 123, compared to 114 for Mussina. For their entire careers Mussina was 123 and Key 122. There was Clemens too. And the under-rated Ed Figuroa. But honestly, rught now Cole would be very near the top of this gang. I don't know that any of them had better overall stuff when at the top of their game. Maybe Guidry? Ford for year after year greatness, no question.

I didn't know Key's numbers were as good as Mussina's, so let's add him to the list. Never fully trusted Clemens. I would rather had seen Wells on the mound than Clemens. Just looked at Figueroa's numbers. He had a pretty good 3 year stretch with the Yanks. Didn't realize his lifetime ERA was 3.51. Stuff wise though, he doesn't belong. Cole and Guidry probably had the best stuff of the list, but right now I'd take any of them. Would love to see El Duque and Nestor on back to back to back days.

I’m just sitting back and enjoying read you two banter back and forth about the best Yankee pitchers. Great men, great times.
Giving a shout out to Chien Ming Wang here. His time was short, he came out of nowhere to be the glue of the staff. Pretty much one pitch, hardly any strikeouts, but nobody could hit anything but the top of the baseball. Worm burner champion.
And in mentioning him, I’d be remiss if I didn’t recall Tommy John. Even when John was basically finished, he was still making batters hit the top of the ball. The grounders were just struck a bit harder and started getting through the infield more. If he could have used a six man infield he might have been able to keep going.
Though not a starter, I always loved seeing Sparky Lyle enter a ball game. He would lock them down time after time. I think he’d be a great guy to hand out with, unless it was your birthday. Might be that if the cake wasn’t so close to a shower he might have left them alone…

No such thing as a gimme… Any of the Oriole players would look God-like in any competition I ever partook of… and you know they’d love to knock off any contender at this point. It’s the closest they’re getting to the playoffs…

And not very competitive pushovers. They do have some nice players at the top of that lineup -- Mullins, Mountcastle and Mancini can all do damage. But it's way downhill after that, and the pitching is brutal, especially with Means out. Anything can happen, but it would be a letdown to lose even one of these tilts. You don't hear the word tilts much these days, do you?

A loss of even one game would be gut wrenching and render dreams of play off chase and pennant chase collapses of the past…

I did hear some broadcaster use the word "chucker" a few days ago. Haven't heard port-sider in a while. Flinger, hurler -- old baseball card terms.
