sabr.org/bioproj/person/191828e7Awesome bio on Cone. I was gonna post it in the BS thread but I figured it deserves it's own. It's a pretty long excellent read. Dude was a great pitcher and an awesome man. I only really got to see him pitch during his Yankee days and after. Didn't get to see him with the Mets and royals. I believe he would make a great manager or at least coach. There's a line in there about how Girardi was getting eaten alive by the press his first year as a Yankee bc he sucked so bad and would hide after games and Cone wound up talking sense into him. I thought that was pretty cool and telling of Girardi. Comes more natural to Cone to deal with the media... I was kinda hoping that when Cone mentioned he would like to be considered for Yankees managerial job that Cash would give him a look... But obviously that didn't happen. Hopefully one day soon he can grab some kinda coaching gig with Yankees if he's into that sorta thing. If not I'm more than content with him behind the mic...

Now a seasoned New Yorker, Cone embraced his role as a leader by welcoming newer players. When Joe Girardi’s early struggles led to frequent taunting on sports talk radio, Cone advised the first-year Yankees catcher that his critics would “lay off” if Girardi interacted with them rather than hiding from the press.85 Girardi rebounded.

Really enjoyable piece. Thanks, Sierchio!
Cone's stuff was filthy. And, he was a battler. If you offered me a one-game start among Glavine, Smoltz, and Cone in their primes, I'd take Cone every time.

Nice article, really. I got a bit of a kick out of the comment that he resembled a choir boy. I've always thought his face made him look a bit like a madman. That deep crease between the eyes being the major culprit. Then, just before yesterday's game, during the pre-game show, I got a kick out of how small Cone's head was in comparison to the rather gigantic melon on top of Michael Kay's shoulders. That would appear side by side was a bit amusing...
No one can deny the talent of the man, and who can begrudge him having utilized his youth to have a bit of fun? I sometimes begrudge myself for not allowing for more fun in my youthful days, and even for missing out on a particular opportunity at debauchery when I was between marriages. Then again, I also sometimes wonder what diseases I might have caught that night. I was "saved" from the opportunity only because I had an attack of diarrhea and was unable to attend the "event" I was offered in room 216 of the same hotel I was staying in...
