Grisham for $5M seems like fine value in and of itself. My question with it is that Hal seems to be itching to decrease payroll and this team has big time needs for starting caliber position players and high leverage inning relievers while already locked into a big payroll... If we're in an either-or situation, I'd rather spend $5M on a reliever and stick someone like Everson Pereira on the roster as a 4th outfielder. He might be a bust, but I'd rather be complaining about that then not having any good relievers. It's just resource allocation. $5M on a 4th outfielder seems like too much, IMO, with so many other holes to fill and Hal's public comments about payroll making me think he wants to slash it some. Signing Grisham for $5mm seems like a bit of an overpay to me but it's not the worst deal Cashman has ever made. I agree with your point about Hal seemingly trying to cut payroll but still over allocating funds for low priority signings. Perhaps $5mm is a mere drop in the bucket when we look at the Yankees overall payroll but it's always the cumulative value of these contracts. The Yankees have $53mm tied up in five players next year that they will probably get little to no value from: Stroman, DJ, Grisham, Hicks and Rizzo. There are several other high end players that you could make a case that they are overpaid. It's always been interesting to me that since Hal often comments about payroll being too high he seemingly is ok with Cashman squandering a significant portion of it each season on over pays.

The last time Grisham hit over .200 was in 2021 and he's a lifetime .213 hitter. I can't see any team trading for this guy or even wanting to, especially since Cashman just handed him 5 million. You can find a minor leaguer that can do what Grisham does for the league minimum. I don't think he has any trade value. Cashman might have signed him as a part of his Plan B if Soto goes to the Mets. At least it gets Judge back to RF and gives the Yankees lots of money to address 1st, the pen and maybe a starter. Grisham is a good fielding 4th OF/pinch runner, but in my opinion, he doesn't hit enough to be part of a Plan B if Soto doesn't re-sign.

MLB ready team OF depth could be another reason why the Yankees decided to keep Grisham. Indeed. Just recall the cadre of failed outfielders from the year before last. Brutal. Exactly, depth players like Ellis are fine. But I can see where the Yankees also want a veteran MLB player like Grisham that knows is role and doesn't complain.
