Abreu was out of options so if he didn't make the team out of spring training so he was not going to be back.
Also a plus is that Rob Brantly won't start the season with the big league team.

Trevino is an elite framer, great defensive catcher, not much on offense.

Trevino is an elite framer, great defensive catcher, not much on offense.
Baseball prospectus agrees with all the kudos on Trevino’s defense. They state that he’s very strong, but that his swing plane is anywhere from flat to sometimes actually hitting down on the ball. Resulting in little power output. They stated that if a batting coach could fix that plane he’s strong enough to hit homers… |

As for Abreu, I liked him. I liked his fastball. For the most part I felt comfortable when he entered a game. He was looking like he may become a decent reliever, and I was looking forward to watching him grow into a role. But I think this trade to be a solid move.
If nothing else happens behind the plate, Rordvedt <sp?> or Trevino will be stashed on the minors for development and compete for the back up job… Not a bad situation to be in with two defensive stalwarts backing up Higgy and his pop…

Heck, it seems most frontline catchers don’t hit much these days… To me, it’s far more important that they do good work behind the plate…The years of pretending Gary could grow into a catcher are over in NY. Posada was not known for his defense, but next to Gary? He was Mickey Cochrane… |
