Exactly. That was a better game IMO. Removing great starting pitchers as an element of the game is a huge loss. The more you reflect on Ryan the greater he seems. In my life there have been few pitchers I enjoyed watching more. He was electric. And, if you didn't get him early, forget it. The problem was that he never played for a great hitting team or he would have won more than 400 games. You could make an argument that his best was equal to the best of any pitcher who ever pitched. I remember sitting in a hotel room in Washington in August 1993 preparing to leave the next day for a two-year assignment to Kuwait and watching Nolan Ryan pitch in a nationally-televised game. I was very consciously making mental images of him pitching knowing I would never see him in a game again. It's still vivid to me. Of course that was pre-YouTube and being able to dredge up dozens of clips whenever you want. |
