The Penguins are down to their third string goalie so they have very little chance in this series but they won't get swept.

The Penguins are down to their third string goalie so they have very little chance in this series but they won't get swept. I've fallen away from the NHL over the years, but I used to be totally involved. I used to like the old Penguins' goalie Tom Barrasso, who was pretty badass for a goalie -- third all-time in penalty minutes with 437 (behind Ron Hextall and Billy Smith, two aggressive skaters who were familiar with the blue line) and first all-time in assists for a goalie with 48 (one ahead of Grant Fuhr's 47.) Jeez, Gretzky had 577 PIM, so Barrasso gave a good account of himself. As you would know better than I, Marc-Andre Fleury broke most of Barrasso's other records for the Pens. To show you how far out of it I am with hockey, I was amazed to see that Fleury is still active, with Minnesota. Hah, I remember the Penguins very first goalie, a guy named Les Binkley, from that first expansion of six teams in 67-68. That expansion included the California Golden Seals, who later became the Cleveland Barons, who actually disbanded after the 1978 season, the last professional North American franchise among the big four sports to disband when they were merged with the old Minnesota North Stars. The Penguins have had some great lines of course. An early one I remember was the PAP line of Greg Polis, Syl Apps and Jean Pronovost. Probably before your memory. I used to like the old Igloo, which if memory serves was the last of the old-school arenas to be used in the NHL. Glad I got to see games there, the Forum in Montreal, Maple Leaf Garden, Boston Garden, Chicago Stadium and the Olympia in Detroit. Even Le Colisee in Quebec. Atmosphere that can not be recreated. Out of all those, I think I liked Maple Leaf Garden the best. It was an old, tough, knowledgeable crowd in the days when smoking was still permitted (or at least fans were smoking, maybe against the rules.) Not many of the cute girls in hockey jerseys you would see in most places. When my brother and I walked past the employee parking area, covered with a rusting corrugated steel gate, we were greeted with a huge "Gretzky Sucks" sign spray-painted on there. The Hartford Whalers used to play in a shopping mall attached to a Sheraton Hotel. Made it convenient to go to the game in January with no heavy coat to lug around. It felt odd to walk past Things Remembered and Orange Julius and So-Fro Fabrics right into the arena. It was worth going just to hear that goofy song they played when the Whalers scored.

Growing up in the south, I know nothing about hockey. I don't know what icing means or what the problem is with a high stick. I know the names Bobby Orr, Mario Lemieux, and Wayne Gretzky, but my all time favorite players were the Hanson Triplets. I remember them playing for an older player-coach, who didn't seem like much of a hockey player. I do recall him having really blue eyes, and I think he even raced cars at one point. He got out of hockey because of a gambling problem, which he had forever because he had his thumbs broken years before. Still, the last I knew he had skipped the country due to some sting with the Irish mob and wound up fighting for his life in some back water town in Bolivia.

The only hockey game I ever watched was live, and of all places, it was in Charleston, SC. I liked the Zamboni the best…

Not exactly playoff hockey, but among the favorites at today's Kentucky Derby is an Ontario-bred horse called Messier. The owners have won two of the past four Derbies, and this guy is going off third at 8-1 odds as of now. Mark Messier himself is not one of the owners. But the horse is a serious contender.
The horse-hockey connection (hmm, that doesn't sound right) includes 2016 Derby winner Nyquist, named for Red Wings player Gustav Nyquist. And Eddie Olczyk has long been a broadcaster at major racing events.
I went to The Preakness in 1980 and one of the horses running was Jack Klugman, who was actually co-owned by the actor. Klugman led him out to the track. You might say they made an odd couple. You might. The equine Klugman had finished third at the Derby, but ran out of the money at The Preakness.

I remember Jack Klugman. Both the horse, and the man. Too bad there wasn’t a Tony Randall horse, fussing about and cleaning the stall. Going off at 132-1… I’m thinking Randall was one of the first flamers in entertainment. Ahead of Liberace? Paul Lynde and Jim Nabors were certainly after him. Not that there’s anything wrong with that…

I would thought perhaps he might have invented “Beano” at that point. Or his wife might have invented it. BTW, are the rest of you catching the advertisements for “Lumi”? The deodorant made for ALL your crevices? Creepy…
