The only series we've lost this year has been to the Baltimore Orioles. That's baseball.....

I don't know how it works but Clay Holmes is 1st on ESPNs Cy Young predictor :
He’s on pace to win 20 games in about 70 innings of work.

. That was supposed to prove this was a bad team. I know, the season was over at the 9 game mark.

Holmes solves the question as usual. ...Watson ejaculated. Several of the Yankees really ejaculated on the home plate umpire today. I thought at least one ejaculator was going to get ejected..

The fact the Yankees have a +49 run diff is pretty good too they struggled with that the last couple years.

Wins have become a meaningless individual stat. Nestor gets 22 outs and gives up 0 runs and gets a no decision. Holmes gets 2 outs and picks up his 4th win of the season, which leads the Yanks, although he's hasn't reached the 15 innings pitched mark. Nestor has one win all season despite a .142 ERA. Montgomery is still looking for his first win of the season, despite a sub 3.00 ERA. Yep, it's become meaningless because of the extreme limitations on starting pitchers. It's tough to pick up Ws when pitchers only average about 5 IP per start, a number that declines every year. I'd be in favor of letting an official scorer determine the winner based on his effectiveness and impact on the game. In a clear case like yesterday's game, it would have been easy. Such a system would also have the potential to make bad decisions, but it would still be an improvement on the mess we have today, which unfairly gives an advantage to relievers to get wins by just being put in the game for the right inning. Pitchers' wins are still obviously important to the pitchers themselves and have been an important statistical component of the game since its inception. Otherwise, eventually there will be a Cy Young-winning starting pitcher with five or six victories.

Further to this topic-- last night Michael Kopech of the White Sox pitched six scoreless innings in getting a no-decision. He is now 0-0 in six starts with a league-leading 0.93 ERA.
Of course he has only pitched 29 innings in those six starts. Tony LaRussa gave us the 100 pitch count. Maybe as a last bequest he could give us a winless Cy Young candidate.

It’s so 1980 to want to get “wins”. The new stat should be the “avoidance of loss”… If I’m 0-4 at the end of the season and you’re 7-5, I’ve out-avoided you. Gimme that trophy 🏆…
