Hicks did everything right except catch the ball. What happened? Seems catching the ball is an important part of playing defense. Or at least it used to be.

Yeah, but Tresh would have had it and made a perfect throw to Richardson to double off the runner. Do you recall a player named Ron Woods? He was traded by the Tigers to the Yankees for Tom Tresh. Two years later, he was traded to the Expos for Ron Swoboda. Ron Woods was the assistant principal of a high school in Hanford, California. I met him when my school's students visited his school. It just so happened that my Yankee buddy Joe had told me about him, so I knew of the trades to and from the Yankees. He could not believe that I knew about him and was a Yankee fan. He was a really nice guy, but I noticed the clock in his office was stuck at 5:00 PM and his calendar on the wall was six months behind. While we were walking across his campus, his students knew my name from coaching them or teaching them and I knew their names. At one point he said, "You know my kids better than I do." And, unfortunately, he was correct. All in all, though, a good-hearted man.

He made one of the greatest catches I ever saw, diving into the rightfield stands ar Yankee Stadium to rob someone whose name I don't recall of a home run. Glad to know he's a good guy. And Tresh -- who made a great World Series catch in left in 1964 to rob I think McCarver-- was destined for stardom until the injuries piled up. He was a tremendous athlete who died far too early.

That was ugly.
Torres was at least supposed to be able to hit. But he can't.

"The boys are marching..." Is that a sly reference to "Sons Of The Desert?"

Joe told me that Woods was a heck of athlete. I remember shaking his hand, he definitely had the mitts of ball player. He also couldn't believe my name was Rizzuto. I had not thought of him in years, until you mentioned Tom Tresh.

Yeah, but Tresh would have had it and made a perfect throw to Richardson to double off the runner. Whitey wouldn’t have allowed it to be hit where it was…
