Maybe it’s inappropriate to wish everyone a happy Memorial Day. A loved one that died protecting our country doesn’t evoke happiness for many people.
I will wish comfort for those who bore losses, and I will wish for a joyous day spent with loved ones, friends, and neighbors. We’re going to a barbecue within walking distance of the house today. It’s windy as hell out, but the temperature is comfortably in the seventies.
But I do want to mention how off it seems to me to not have a New York Yankee game on the Telly on this of all holidays. I hope the schedule makers don’t ever make this mistake again.
Have a great Memorial Day, guys…

An Uncle I never knew, my father's brother, was killed the day before his twenty-first birthday in Brest, France in 1944 leading an assault on a German gunnery position in some of the nastiest fighting of World War II. Obviously millions of families have similar stories, it's just one of many, but I think of him on days like this. It's odd, sometime back in the early 1980s my Father found an acetate recording my Uncle had made in the UK shortly before his unit shipped off to France. He had sent it home to his parents, my grandparents, to let them know he was doing well and was looking forward to seeing them soon. It was found among my Grandfather's effects after he died, but he had never told anyone about it, probably because he found it too painful to discuss. It was just a simple greeting, about two minutes long, but it was rather haunting to hear that voice for the first time in my life. Memorial Day doesn't have nearly the impact that it used to have, largely because fewer families have any connection to the military. And yeah, how does it happen that there is no game scheduled for the Yankees today? Up until at least the early 1970s, Memorial Day almost always meant a double-header (perish the thought.)

My older brother has been gone ten years now. He was buried as a Vietnam Veteran, but the closest he got to ‘Nam was France 🇫🇷…
