If you had told me that the Yankees would get four runs in six innings off of McClanahan, I’d have taken that in a heartbeat.

That's it then! Wow, six straight batting titles. Amazing. Joe Morgan was always a Rogers Hornsby fan. Joe might have recognized in Hornsby a fellow dour personality who was obsessively focused on his craft. I was thinking that Hornsby was in some ways baseball's version of Ben Hogan -- single-minded, gruff, brilliant at his calling, not particularly well-liked by his colleagues. Then I discovered that both Hornsby and Hogan were brought up in Ft. Worth. Is there something in the water there? Of course Byron Nelson was also from Ft. Worth, and he was golf's version of Mariano Rivera. Hornsby is buried in Hornsby Bend, Texas. Pretty tough, rugged place in early 20th century Fort Worth, Texas, after a traditional stop on the Chisholm Trail and the gambling circuit that drew Butch and Sundance, Bat Masterson, Doc Holliday, and the Earps to frequent Hell's Half Acre - an area comprised of iniquity at its finest in a sub-tropical climate. Lots of gun fights and violence. Then, the depression in 1929, when Hogan and Nelson were still boys of 17 years old. I suppose you either grow up insular or affable, if you aren't a rabble-rouser, thief, or troublemaker.

Trivia Question: Who are the 5 players besides Wade Boggs to win 5+ batting titles since 1920? Answer: Rod Carew, Tony Gwynn, Stan Musial, Rogers Hornsby, Ted Williams I started looking at batting champions, and one who was completely off my radar was Freddy Sanchez of the Pirates. He won it with a .344 average in 2006. For his career he had 1,012 hits, and 200 of them were in that season.

Such a random batting champ.

Did Hicks cut himself shaving too? Fool can't do anything right. This was what I was afraid of when Hicks had a few multiple hit games: we'll never get him out of here until the last year of his contract.
