Jays lose on a walkoff to the Mariners.
Rays lose on a balk.
Red Sox embarrassed by the Yankees.
Orioles only 4 games behind the Blue Jays.
Yankees 15.5 games up on the closest competition (Rays) and 16 up on the Red Sox.
Great day of baseball in the AL East!
Indeed!

What a dope. That ball was like 20 rows into the seats. His team mates were chiding him for trying to catch it…

Near as I can tell, no team has ever blown a 15-game lead. The 1951 Dodgers had a 13.5 game lead over the Giants on August 15, but the Giants went 37-7 the rest of the way to force a three-game playoff and the famous Bobby Thomson home run. "The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant!" The 1978 Red Sox of course were 14 games up on the fourth place Yankees on July 19 (biggest lead over second place was 10 over Milwaukee.) An under-rated blown lead was the 1995 Angels, who on August 19 were 10.5 up on Texas and 12.5 up on third place Seattle. The Angels went 14-28 the rest of the way -- including two separate nine-game losing streaks -- which allowed Seattle to tie them and force a one-game playoff which of course the Mariners won. With awful implications for the Yankees. The 1964 Phillies had maybe the most famous short-term implosion, blowing a 6.5 game lead with 12 remaining. They proceeded to lose 10 in a row. They actually won their last two games to finish one game behind St. Louis and in a tie with Cincinnati. Had the Cardinals lost their final game to an awful Mets team -- and they had lost the previous two -- it would have resulted in the first-ever three-way tie for the pennant. Again, major implications for the Yankees. The 2009 Tigers blew a three-game lead with four games remaining. It forced a tiebreaker with the Twins for the divisional crown, which the Tigers lost in 12 innings.

That’s comforting, but in baseball there seems to always be that first time. I just want to see the team stay healthy, keep a winning attitude and win 11 post season games. 11-8? Okay. 11-5? Okay. The best would be 11-0, but just get those 11 wins, any way they can…

I don’t think he looked up a single factoid therein…

Maybe I am a prude or oldfashioned, but I would not have done that at anytime - behind, tied, ahead - even when I was their age. Seems very uncomfortable, self-serving, amateurish, and it looks stupid. I'd prefer handshakes, slaps on the back, high-fives, and atta-boys followed by some Gatorade and some sunflower seeds as a personal reward.
