I thought very highly of his defense… I wanted him too. One of those guys I always kept an eye on because he flew just a bit under the radar. He got stronger in his later seasons, but never so much that he appeared as on of the PED abusers. He wound up with 304 HR and 320 SB…

My prediction: no one makes it to the HOF through this vote.

My prediction: no one makes it to the HOF through this vote. I’m liking it. I’d be cool in no one ever make it again. I’ve lost my verve for the whole thing. Glad I saw it before that happened…

Congratulations to the ex-Yankee farmhand! Yeah, I slowly became a convert to the McGriff cause if only to tweak Bonds, Palmeiro et al. Certainly there are many less-deserving in there, although that argument has its own slippery slope too. Contrary to what was being written ten or so years ago, the hardcore PED guys (except Ortiz, for whom exceptions seem to be always granted) don't appear to be gaining enough traction to get in. Since Mattingly was well short and now it will be several years before the next vote of this group, he either isn't getting in or will get in only after he dies or contracts some terrible illness to generate a sympathy vote.

Fred McGriff is the only MLB player to hit 30+ HR in a season for 4 different teams…

I agree it's a logical mishmash. I don't think he's recovered his equilibrium since reporting that Judge was going to the Giants.

I agree it's a logical mishmash. I don't think he's recovered his equilibrium since reporting that Judge was going to the Giants. He appears to totally disregard Pettitte for PED use (By his own admission, Pettitte used once during his rehab on the disabled list) but voted for Bonds, who has never admitted to PED use, despite much more evidence. Rollins at a career 95 OPS+ is in because of his "impact and defense," but Omar Vizquel is excluded due to his offense after 24 years in MLB (only because of his defense and impact at shortstop) with a lifetime .272 batting average. Billy Wagner is out because of 11.3 postseason innings. From age 25 to 40, Omar Vizquel batted .282/.349/.370/.719 playing an otherworldly shortstop that only perhaps The Wizard of Oz/Ozzie Smith could understand. How much would Omar Vizquel be taking to the bank today with those numbers over 16 years?

Just to complete the thought here -- Scott Rolen squeaks in at 76.2 percent. The only other close calls were Todd Helton at 72 and Billy Wagner at 68. Omar Vizquel continues to be overlooked at only 19.5 and Andy Pettitte at 17. PED poster children A-Rod and Manny languish in the mid-30s.
We've gone over this plenty so I won't do a rehash, but I do wonder if some of these guys actually saw Vizquel play. Scott Rolen isn't going to generate a lot of excitement -- no problem with him going in, although he's definitely a second-tier HOFer, as are the majority of people in there. Nothing wrong with it, he was strong at pretty much every aspect of the game. It seems a bit surprising that he played 183 more games with the Phillies than with the Cardinals, although of his seven All Star selections five were with the Cardinals and two were with the Reds late in his career.
Only two voted in by the writers over the past three years (the other was David Ortiz in 2021) which equals the fewest elected by them over a three year span since the vote became annual shortly after World War II. Somebody has to get in every year, at least from one of the committees, or there is no ceremony. No ceremony is bad for the Hall, for Cooperstown and for MLB.
