I always thought that about Van Slyke. He made Bonds a better left fielder. One of my best friends is Bob Patterson who pitched for the Pirates during those years. We got to travel some with the Pirates during that time(not flying with them but staying in the team hotels and sitting with the families at the games). I've got some funny stories about Van Slyke, Bonds, Bonilla, Leyland, etc. Good times. Cool, Bearman! Let’s dish out those stories. I’d love to hear them, and I’m sure I not the only one… I'll start with a Van Slyke one. Often after road games some of the relief pitchers such as Patterson, Kipper, Landrum, etc. would sit in the team hotel lobby and drink a beer. Typically I found that hotel security would not let fans into the lobbies of the team hotels but I was staying there so Bob invited me to join the group. The teams usually stayed at the nicest hotel closest to the ballpark. This time we were staying in downtown Los Angeles and it was about 11:00 P.M. Van Slyke and his wife and I think a child or two walked into the hotel and through the lobby to go to their room. A couple of the hotel workers politely asked Van Slyke for his autograph. He said no and kept on walking. Immediately his wife said, turn your ass around and sign those autographs. He immediately did what she said. I've got a picture of a group of us standing in front of Van Slyke's locker(he wasn't there at the time) at Three Rivers but I am not smart enough to know how to post it here. As a kid I loved baseball and dreamed of playing for the Yankee's but I wasn't worth a damn. Being able to walk out of the locker room and through the tunnel and onto the playing field was surreal.(This was in the morning before a night game so just a few player's were there). One of my favorite Leyland stories happened in Philadelphia. We were staying in a downtown Philadelphia hotel. We were leaving to eat supper at the Chart House. The team buses were waiting outside the hotel to take the team to the stadium. Leyland was waiting outside at the buses. I had met Jim several times but for sure he didn't remember me from Adam's house cat. I remarked to Jim that I was leaving the coaching to him that night. I'll never forget what he said: "I'll try not to F**K it up".

I strongly recommend Roku. We bought out little receiver box for about $70. (Upgraded, the lowest price one is about $40). Our old DISH was $158 per month. We chose to pay for Roku premium at $5.23 per month. That’s it! $153 per month saved. That said, we also have an antenna for local channels (though you can get them on Roku, we don’t bother. You can pay for lots of extra shows and channels if you need them, and my MLB.com X-innings was a once per year subscription of $149… I would have had to pay more than that for the baseball with DISH. Last year it was an extra $260… I purchased Roku a couple months ago, but it doesn't work for some reason. I got the $40 one at Wal-Mart. I'm still thinking about what I want to do. No Dish or DirecTV for me - got rid of the latter when we left Iowa in 2016. The last several years, I have purchased MLB.TV and watch games on my laptop. Likely, that is what I will do again.

Good woman!

I had to push the reset button on mine to get it to work, which I understand is a common issue…

I had a few beers with Cal Ripken, Sr. one night when I was an invited guest at a Lion’s Club function. His brother was a bank president in the town (Rising Sun, MD). I remember Cal as being acerbic, much like his brother, Bill, and pretty much stewed. His wife, Vi was there as well. She seemed sweet enough, but was no stranger to the bar either. I couldn’t tell you a word that was said that night other than that Cal gave off a little “ptooey” sound when someone told him I was a Yankee fan. I was playing golf at the time and in an odd set of circumstances there were three separate instances where I arrived for a mid-to-late afternoon round and Cal, Sr, Vi, and another couple were playing golf and were on the then seventh hole, which is the sixteenth now. Each time I stayed by my vehicle and watched them play through. Not once did Cal get his approach shot airborne on those three tries. He had definite ground ball tendencies… 🤓🤓🤓😂

We fall behind by a couple runs early as Sevy loses the plate and then serves up a bowl of taters…
I like Oswaldo, but I hate these one field interviews more all the time. If that was me as a player I would not have wanted to talk out in the field. Leave me alone, I’m busy, I wax very intense out there and I was usually moving even with just the pitch location…
