Mickey Mantle
The water tower in his hometown sports a painted with version of his retired uniform number. (Photo to follow via Kaybli-gram).
His future manager said of him before his first major league game, “He has more speed than any slugger I’ve ever seen and more slug than any other speedster.”…

August 14, 1942-The New York Yankees would turn an MLB-record 7-double plays in an 11-2 win over the Philadelphia A’s. Yankees Catcher Bill Dickey guns down 2 A’s runners following called 3rd strikes; 3 are started by the DP combo of Phil Rizzuto and Joe Gordon, Reliever Johnny Murphy triggers another and 3B Red Rolfe initiates another one. The 7 DPs give the Yankees 150 on the year; they'll finish with 190 DPs for the 1942 AL season, just missing the (since surpassed) MLB mark they set in the 1941 AL season with 194.

Now, they’d seemingly rather hit into them than turn them…

MONTE IRVIN 25-Feb-1919 in Haleburg. AL; graduated from Orange HS in Orange NJ (Newark Suburb) & attended Lincoln University in the city of the same name in PA.* In the 1st G of the 1951 WS, NYG’s Irvin stole home off Allie Reynolds & Yogi Berra, scoring the 2nd R of a 5-2 W over NYY. Imagine having the guts to steal home in the first inning of your first-ever World Series contest!… *Pipps would be quite familiar with Lincoln U., I’m sure. pippsheadache

WILLIE WELLS
Earning the nickname “El Diablo”, his range was so great and his hands so fast that opponents, fans & teammates thought he was using black magic, first attributed to him when he played in Mexico.
Wells was beaned in a playoff G & knocked unconscious. Against medical advice, he played the next day, but with a construction helmet taped to his head. He is now credited with being the first MLB player to wear a batting helmet.
The former narrative, and perhaps more accurate one was that Tony Cuccinello experimented with protective head gear in 1938, and that batting helmets were popularized in the ‘50’s.
Wells was twice MVP of the Cuban League.
Wells and Martin Dihigo are the only two players to be inducted into the American, Cuban and Mexican Baseball Halls of Fame.
As were many players of the negro leagues, Willie Wells play was advertised in grandiose terms. We’ll never know the exact truth of how good he was…

Pretzel Logic?
August 1,1903-Philadelphia Athletics starter Rube Waddell no-hits the New York Highlanders, except for Shortstop Kid Elberfeld, who has 4 singles. These, plus a lavish 6 walks, down the A's by the score of 3-2. Waddell observes afterward, "If I would have walked him 4 times, I would have pitched a no-hitter."
