Rizz, I'm wondering if you can remember Marichal pitching. Maybe at the tail end of his career? He was always worth the price of admission. Pipps, I recall Marichal pitching for Boston when I was nine years old and a bit earlier during the end of his tenure with the Giants. I was a McCovey fan and liked San Francisco's uniforms and the pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge. And, of course, Karl Malden and Michael Douglas in "The Streets Of San Francisco." Those Giants' teams could hit with Bobby Bonds, Gary Matthews, Garry Maddox, Dave Kingman, and Gary Thomasson. The only time I ever disliked the Giants was when Barry Bonds was dabbling with needles. Now, the streets of San Francisco are littered with needles. Sarah and I loved San Francisco, especially me. In another life, I could have lived there. Joe Simas used to say that as soon as I breathed in the Bay Area air that it was like I had snorted cocaine. I never had more energy and positivity than when in that city. No idea why. Perhaps there was a similar place in Sicily or southern Italy that my genes recognized. I had the same feelings toward it Rizz. Such an elegant place. And there were plenty of Italians in North Beach!

Pretty good guesses. It was indeed Dennis Bennett… 1964 Phillies Starting RotationJim Bunning 19-9 Chis Short 17-9 Dennis Bennet 12-14 Art Mahaffey 12-9 Ray Culp 8-7 Closer Jack Baldschun 6-9 with a 3.12 ERA 21 saves. 71 games. Also it features the last season for veteran hurler Bobby Shantz, he would turn down the club's offer to return for 1965 NL season. 1st season for Pitcher Rick Wise Good stuff Clipper. Jack Baldschun died just last year. He had a great screwball and was a very durable reliever. He was also a regular at Brandywine Racetrack in Delaware, where I spent far too much of my youth. In large part because my family had ties there. Baldschun loved harness racing and would occasionally call the races over the PA system. He was a one-man party. My uncle owned a restaurant and bar near the track that catered to the race crowd. Baldschun was a regular there. There was a piano in the bar that he would commandeer and play crazy songs like "Yes, We Have No Bananas" or "Bill Bailey." He would get the whole place singing and dancing. Just a wonderful man. My uncle never took a dime from him because he was so good for business.

KIRBY HIGBE Higbe started 8 G for PIT in 1948 & finished 31, but all told, he appeared on the mound for them 56 times. Their current record is 94, set by Kent Tekulve in 1979 & tied by Salomon Torres in 2006. “Appearances” numbers sure have changed. John Wyatt amazed me when he cracked 80 for the A’s in ‘64… Higbe joined BRO in 1941, had a record of 22-9 as the Bums won their 2nd Modern Era pennant, the 1st since 1920. His own teammate, Whitlow Wyatt, tied with a team & league high 22 W. His book was called “The High Hard One” In it, Higbe is frank about his career & his life after baseball. The latter portion is perhaps a little too frank. His autobiography was one of many methods he attempted to keep his family’s finances in the black after baseball. His walkoff HR: Higbe............ 11-Sep-1947........ Johnny Sain This one was in the bottom of the 13th inning! www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/PIT/PIT194709111.shtml…

CRAIG LEFFERTS - In 1986, his 4th season in MLB, Lefferts had 9 wins among his all time Padres’ record of 83 appearances. Lefferts was born on 29-Sep-1957, in Munich. His US Air Force father was stationed there at the time. Lefferts has the highest WAR of pitcher born in in the 1900’s. He was the winning pitcher in the 1980 College World Series title game, leading the University of Arizona Wildcats to a 5-3 victory over the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors. He was named to the 1980 College World Series all-tournament team. Lefferts walkoff homer:(how amazing! Bottom of the twelfth, Lefferts hits his only MLB HR off one of the homer-stingiest pitchers of his era… Lefferts......... 25-Apr-1986......... The clean single season HR champ until 2022 and Judge. Judge and Babe are still the only two clean players to hit 60 within the old 154 game schedule. But what Maris did was such a thrill. Glad I got to see both of those home run chases.
