Here’s the way I see it. There is no such thing as clutch. Until there is… Wasn't it fitting that Derek Jeter had a walk-off, RBI single to the opposite field to win the last game he played? Rizz, that whole situation was surreal (and actually it was his last game at Yankee Stadium; he did play after that in Fenway where his last AB was an RBI single.) The only reason Jeter even had that AB was because David Robertson blew a 5-2 lead in the top of the ninth by allowing three runs. In the bottom of the ninth Jose Pirela led off with a single. Antoan Richardson ran for Pirela (some forgettable names in there.) Brett Gardner bunted Richardson to second, bringing Jeter up for the inevitable inside-out swing for the game winning single to right. Fairy tale stuff like much of Jeter's career. Like his 3,000th hit being a home run as part of a five hit game. The flip that only Derek Jeter could have made. Most of us on this board saw his whole career and it was amazing from start to finish. And clutch. Mr. November as the clock struck midnight. Get out of here.

George Gore was baseball’s first holdout.
Prior to the 1879 season Chicago owner Albert G. Spalding offered Gore a contract for $1,200. Gore countered with $2,500 and became a “hold-out” by refusing to play or report to team facilities until the contract was properly negotiated. Eventually the 2 sides agreed to $1,900 for that year...

Mickey Lolich was born right-handed!
A falling motorcycle fell on his 2-year-old clavicle, ironically, his left one. Rehab strengthening was so good, he became a lefty in sports.
A sports writer wrote of the 23-year-old Lolich, "He now eats, writes and bats right-handed, pitches left-handed and thinks sideways.”…

CHARLIE HOUGH
He was the first native Hawaiian to receive a HOF vote. (Not too shabby for a guy with a 216-216 career record). Hough, born in Honolulu 05-Jan-1948. On 21-Aug-1959, President Eisenhower signed the proclamation that admitted Hawaii as the 50th U.S. state. Hough received only 4 HOF votes (8.%) in the HOF vote of 2000 & so has not appeared again on a HOF ballot.
Also was the first MLB player to throw a MLB pitch in Florida…

This has taken about ten years to happen, maybe more. I’ve been providing trivia bits for this board for a long time, but I’ve finally either run out (don’t count on it), or I’ve got a case of writer’s block.
Most of the tidbits started in the Bull$hit thread, until I isolated them into a separate thread because that thread was quite active with other items.
My favorites were tales of failure and of odd seasons or numbers. Having lived through Joey Gallo and Chris Davis, it bec as me hard to find numbers that sunk to lower depths.
So, I’m taking some time off that subject this week. At least I think I am. We’ll see. Maybe this is a simple cry for help that will again stir the juices and get me researching and writing again…

It's always been my favorite thread, and you do most of the heavy lifting. You've done a lot of serious excavations, so I'm guessing it gets tiring. So if you want to take the two weeks of leave that your contract calls for every five years, we can't really begrudge that.

This is one my favorites features on the board, all the trivia and information you put out there. I read every post and hit the like button on just about all of it! Unless you're writing a piece on Curt Schilling or the Astros or one of the steroid cheats. Can't like those just out of principle but I even appreciate those ones!

Aaron Judge has had 83 games during which he fanned 3 times, 11 games with 4 K’s, and three with 5 Ks
Mantle had 59 games with 3 K’s. He fanned 4 times in a game on 10 occasions, 3 of them in his final season, the only season he did it more than once.
Babe Ruth fanned 3 times 21 times.
Lou Gehrig fanned 3 times 13 times.
Joe Dimaggio only fanned 3 times once in his career. Amazing…

Pat Hentgen was once described by his team doctor as the most physically fit athlete he’d every worked with.
