Yesterday Oswaldo thought he would be playing this weekend in the International League, instead he's homering at Dodger Stadium.

I’ve always found that the highly skilled and highly motivated players always seem lucky. When you’re good at what you do, you within a range that allows for luck… And, then there are the inexplicable idiots who fall ass-backwards into a pile of Christmas. I’m reminded of the time my drive was into the trees on the 18th hole, and I failed to escape cleanly. The third shot was from 140 yards and decided to take a half-swing with a 4 iron with the ball back in my stance to avoid hitting a limb again. The ball landed short of the green by maybe 40 years then slowed down and crept slowly onto the green and dropping into the cup for an explicable birdie. I was still a struggling golfer at that point. I had noticed that my friend was always straight and some guys called him lucky because he got good bounces near the greens. They didn’t realize that those bounces were the result of missing on the right side of mounds and bunkers…

They didn’t realize that those bounces were the result of missing on the right side of mounds and bunkers… My father-in-law hit a nine iron on a short par three that hooked high over the fence and protective netting, bounced into traffic at a three-way stop, careened off the side of the concrete island that separated the three lanes of traffic under the hanging stop light, bounded back in bounds onto the green and landed four inches from the hole. I hit to the middle of the green, the ball hit a branch that had fallen onto the green, the ball ricocheted at a ninety degree angle into the sand trap.

I was still a struggling golfer at that point. I had noticed that my friend was always straight and some guys called him lucky because he got good bounces near the greens. We had an Englishman at work, I’ve discussed his filthy habits in here before. He used to tell the strangest golf stories. He spoke of a 195 yard par three that he hit a nine iron onto. His nine iron was lucky to go 115 yards and in any direction. He would tell this story over and over. “Ah hit ma nine iron right onto that green one day. 195 yards. I don’t know how I did it, I never hit a nine iron that far before and I ain’t done it since.” So we discussed this often because we’d all heard the story. It was either that he made it up, or there was 62 mile wind at his back or… he bladed the shot. That made the most sense because he would often pull up and out of his shots or bury the club in the ground begins the ball and only move 30 yards. But the one lingering question was why would he CHOOSE a 9 iron for that shot? With that thought I decided his entire story was a lie. I don’t remember ever seeing him hit a green in regulation. To score 120 he had to lose count by about 25 strokes, which he often did, but we didn’t care. He wasn’t fooling us and we had no money on the game against him. We just tried to stay away from his gross aromas and not look when he bent over to putt so we wouldn’t see his ass hanging out of his pants with no undies and a (pants) waist size several inches larger than his actual waist… “The Dung Beetle”… what a nickname, I’m afraid it was me that thought of it…
