So far, the Yankees don't have a lefty in the bullpen. Hill is a lefty, although he isn't the dominate hard throwing lefty that teams dream about having in the pen. Thank you, I forgot about him.

Houston traded too much for Kikuchi.
Will there be a team that trades to much for Cortes?

Houston traded too much for Kikuchi. Will there be a team that trades to much for Cortes? With Cole questionable now, I think the Yanks will be taking Cortes off the market. EDIT: Cole says it's just poor recovery from his last start, and nothing to do with his elbow. Maybe he doesn't want to face the Phillies in this park, and would rather go against the Jays at home this weekend. I dunno. Cole is tough almost all the time, but once in a while, he does things that make you go "Hmmm...". Well, better that the Yanks be safe rather than sorry with Cole, considering his contract and his importance to their chances of going anywhere in the post-season.

I still really want Diaz for 1B. Leadoff has been disastrous this year and he's experienced in the role. Positionally, we don't have a 1B now or for the future. Rizzo is hurt and looked washed. DJ looks washed. Rice has a .568 OPS since the 3 HR game and drastic platoon splits as a left handed hitter - he's never projected as an everyday option.
With Stanton back in the lineup, Torres and Verdugo showing signs of life, Wells on a tear lately, and Chisholm showing well in his first game at 3B it's actually looking up on offense. Also have Dominguez coming back as a "next line of defense" for Verdugo falling back off or Stanton getting hurt again. Things actually look pretty solid now at 8/9 positions. There still isn't a great leadoff hitter though and 1B is the 9th position that isn't solved at all. Diaz is an absolute dream fit IMO as he plays the perfect position for us and hits in the perfect lineup spot. Fits the team like a glove.

Are they going to sell of Dominguez and others for Scott? I hope not... Good lord, I hope not. No longer a worry, but no longer a hope, either. Scott is being traded to the Padres.

Alex Verdugo Receiving Trade Interest By Mark Polishuk | July 30, 2024 at 2:48pm CDT
An unknown number of teams have been in touch with the Yankees about Alex Verdugo’s availability, according to reporter Francys Romero (X link). There doesn’t appear to be any sense that a trade is particularly close, though another source tells Romero that it isn’t out of the question that Verdugo could be moved. Verdugo would be a pure rental for any acquiring team, and he is owed roughly $2.9MM for the remainder of the season (from his $8.7MM salary).
New York just picked up Verdugo this past offseason, as a rare trade between the Yankees and Red Sox resulted in the outfielder coming to the Bronx for his final arbitration-eligible season. Verdugo got off to a nice start with his new team by hitting well over the 1st 5 weeks of play, but his production has since gone south, with a .222/.264/.346 slash line in his last 297 plate appearances. He is providing strong glovework as the regular left fielder, but Verdugo’s 90 wRC+ for the season has added to the Yankees’ overall difficulty in finding consistent offense beyond Aaron Judge and Juan Soto.
Giancarlo Stanton’s return from the injured list fills one hole in the lineup, and with Stanton getting the bulk of DH duty, Judge will resume the everyday center field role. Trent Grisham and utilityman Oswaldo Cabrera could get some left field work in the event of a Verdugo trade, but the likelier scenario would be that the Yankees would again call up star prospect Jasson Dominguez, who was recently activated from the Triple-A injured list.
Dominguez didn’t make his 2024 debut until mid-May due to his recovery from Tommy John surgery, and he got only about a month’s worth of action before an oblique strain shelved him for roughly 6 weeks. With only 25 games under his belt this season, the Yankees might want to give him a bit more Triple-A time to make sure Dominguez is fully healthy and ramped up, though his big numbers at the plate indicate that he doesn’t have much less to prove against minor league pitching. Dominguez wowed baseball with a .980 OPS in his 1st 33 PAs as a big leaguer last season before the TJ surgery brought his debut year to an abrupt end.

Yankees Scratch Gerrit Cole With Body Fatigue, To Select Will Warren By Anthony Franco | July 30, 2024 at 2:59pm CDT
The Yankees scratched Gerrit Cole from tonight’s scheduled start against the Phillies due to general body fatigue. Well-regarded pitching prospect Will Warren is getting the call for a spot start in what’ll be his major league debut. The Yankees will need to select him onto the 40-man roster, which has 2 vacancies pending their deadline activity.
There’s no indication this is anything more than a day-to-day issue. Yet it’s at least worth monitoring after Cole missed the 1st half of the season with elbow inflammation. Cole has made 7 starts since being reinstated in the middle of June. He owns an uncharacteristic 5.40 ERA thanks largely to 9 HRs allowed. If the Yankees are at all concerned about Cole’s health, it could impact their approach to the deadline over the next 2 hours. They’ve already been tied to starting pitchers, including to Jack Flaherty at the top of the market. There are rumblings the Yankees could even add an impact starter like Flaherty and look to flip Nestor Cortes.
Warren, 25, is a former 8th-round pick who has developed into one of New York’s top prospects. He ranks 7th among Yankees farmhands at Baseball America. Warren’s arsenal is headlined by his mid-90s fastball and potential plus slider. He has a shot to be a mid-rotation starter. The Southeastern Louisiana product has started 20 times in Scranton. His 6.11 ERA is disappointing, but Warren has an impressive 27.1% strikeout rate against a manageable 8.2% walk percentage.

Yanks got reliever Kelly Austin from the Astros in the Ferguson deal. An odd duck, he went undrafted in 2023 with the new much shorter draft. The Astros signed him as a 22 year old free agent. He's pitching so-so in high A for a 23 year old. Don't know how hard he throws, but he's the kind of prospect the Yanks frequently trade for. As this is just his 2nd season in organized ball, he doesn't have to be added to the 40-man until after the 2025 season at the earlies, maybe not until after 2026, and maybe the Yanks think they can develop him. He does have very high K-BB percentages, but in very limited experience and against competition younger than he is, or the same age. They also got $750,000 in international bonus pool money, also a typical move.

Padres To Acquire Tanner Scott, Bryan Hoeing By Steve Adams | July 30, 2024 at 3:32pm CDT
The Padres are finalizing a deal to acquire closer Tanner Scott from the Marlins, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports. Craig Mish of SportsGrid and the Miami Herald adds that righty Bryan Hoeing is also going to San Diego in the deal.
It’s the latest trade market strike for a Padres club that has already added righty Jason Adam in a deal with the Rays and that picked up Luis Arraez in another early-season blockbuster with Miami. The Scott trade is still pending the medical review of the players involved.

Not sure how I feel about trading Verdugo. Dominguez has a very small 8-game MLB sample size, and while he's looking promising, he has missed A LOT of time this season and into the end of last. Plus Verdugo has just finally started hitting again. Guess it would depend on the return.

I'd like to have Diaz, too, he's always been a pain in the neck for the Yanks, except when they beat him on called 3rd strikes that aren't strikes. He's also played some 3rd in the past, but the metrics say he plays a poor defensive 3rd base, and that's why he's at first now. Just don't see how they fit him into the puzzle without trading a player in the lineup away.

Plus Verdugo has just finally started hitting again. Guess it would depend on the return. I don't think they can get a decent starter or closer for Verdugo's last 2 months. If they trade him it'll more like be to get a prospect in the low minors they don't have to put on the 40-man for a couple of years, to basically open up a spot for Dominguez. Maybe they can find a team fighting for a Wild Card who needs a LF and take advantage. Again: I dunno.
