I don't know if any of you saw Joel Sherman's column a few days ago, but the gist was that Carlos Rodon blowing kisses to booing Yankee fans on July 19 in Anaheim was 28 years almost to the day that Jack McDowell flipped off Yankee fans on July 18 for booing him as he left the mound.
After losing both ends of a doubleheader to the White Sox in that game, the Yankees were 33-40. After that they swept the Royals in a three game series and finished 46-25 for the rest of that shortened season to make it to the Wild Card series.
They also picked up David Cone and Reuben Sierra at the trade deadline. Cone, McDowell, Andy Pettitte and Scott Kiamaniecki all pitched well down the stretch. So at least some historical precedence to look back at.
