Hah, British bubble gum from 1969. Too early for you Rizz! Actually the guy behind that was also behind "My Baby Loves Lovin" and "United We Stand" and "Gimme Dat Ding." Just labeled as different groups. At the same time there was a US counterpart named Ron Dante who was essentially the Archies, the Cuff Links, Ohio Express and many others I am not recalling at the moment. You missed one pipps--Beach Baby by First Class. The singer for all five being Tony Burroughs with 5 different groups. A one-hit wonder five different times. As mentioned, Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes by Edison Lighthouse; United We Stand by Brotherhood of Man; My Baby Loves Loving by White Plains; and the Dylanesque Gimme Dat Ding by the Pipkins. Three were apparently in the British Top 10 at the same time--somewhere about 1971. Darkest days in the UK since World War II. That song "Beach Baby" struck a raw nerve for me. Pure torture, and it seemed like it lasted for a half hour. My cousin long ago made a tape of what he considered unbearable records culled from stuff his sister had bought in the 70s. He chose "Beach Baby" as the grand finale. Others I remember from that tape were "Don't Give Up On Us Baby" by David Soul; "Please Come To Boston" by Dave Loggins; "Telephone Man" by Meri Wilson; "Takes My Breath Away" by Rex Smith and "Playground Of My Mind" by Clint Holmes.

Red Sox lost, Jays looking like they are about to lose Yankees just can never take advantage of these teams playing meh. Records this month: Red Sox 6-7 Jays 8-5 or 6 Yankees 6-9 If Jays result holds Yankees could have still been roughly 3.5 behind by simply just winning 2 games they lost. Just losing every chance they are given. Instead they keep losing and will be 6.5 out if all results hold. Even though it is logically impossible, it seems like more teams lose than win every night. There's so much mediocrity out there. While I don't think this Yankee team is very good, it hardly seems possible that they can be as bad as they've looked this past week. I hope they at least show a pulse against Boston; otherwise this homestand will be really ugly.

You could probably add anything by Bobby Goldsboro to your cousin's list. As an aside, I worked up a medley with snippets (usually the chorus) of those 5 British pop hits and have played it in public a few times. I call it the Tony Burroughs Suite. [Maybe it should be "Sweet" since it's mostly bubblegum]. I tell people I'll buy them a beer if they can name 2 of the groups. Some can get Edison Lighthouse cause you sometimes still hear Love Grows..., but nobody gets another one.

I did some research and see that he did backing harmonies for Elton John for "Tiny Dancer" and "Levon." More concerning is that he was involved with producing nine Barry Manilow albums. It's tough to make up for a sin that egregious. Bobby Goldsboro gets partial credit for being able to do a spectacular impression of a cricket. Completely inhuman sound. I saw him do this several times on "The Tonight Show." Obviously Johnny Carson was impressed too. For sure, Goldsboro did some of the most shamelessly sappy, maudlin songs ever recorded -- it's painful to recap them -- "See The Funny Little Clown," "Watching Scotty Grow," "In The Autumn Of My Life" and of course the crown jewel of sappiness "Honey," which makes every worst song of all-time list I've ever seen. He also made a forgotten by everyone but me ditty in 1964 called "Me Japanese Boy, I Love You." Try requesting that one from your local bar band. But amazingly enough he did make a few quasi-listenable modest hits in the mid-60s like "Little Things" and "It's Too Late" (not the Carole King song) that at least wouldn't make you want to jab those hat pins into your eyes. But the money was in the sap, no question.

Kinda went down the Tony Burruoghs rat hole a few years ago. He was basically the "studio" singer like you'd have a studio guitarist. I'd bet money that the 5 songs we've been talking about have other common musicians as well. On those few occasions I do open mics, I still do Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes. But I like a fair amount of bubblegum songs, especially if they're kinda peppy--like Sugar, Sugar. Sappy, maudlin songs I like much less. Speaking of Sugar, Sugar, co-written by Andy Kim who also sang on the record. He later who scored a hit of his own with Rock Me Gently in the mid-70's.

He also did "Baby How'd We Ever Get This Way" and covered The Ronettes "Baby I Love You." I vastly prefer The Ronettes version. 1910 Fruitgum Company churned out a bunch of bubblegum hits -- "1,2,3 Red Light" and "Simon Says" and "Goody Goody Gumdrop" and one you definitely won't hear anymore "Indian Giver."

That's fine. I've about exhausted my bubblegum knowledge and have nothing to add to the Yankees "performance" last night.

game threads are getting shorter and shorter. The realization of the Yankees not making the post season is finally setting in. Enjoy the rest of the summer.

Guys, I will be staying in with a friend for a couple days until Saturday. Going to hit some more NYC restaurants. I will miss Friday and Saturday's games. Hopefully while I'm gone we can put a streak together and turn our season around!

Man, you are tearing through the restaurant scene. Do they still even have Zagat Guides? They were a necessity 20-25 years ago.
