Where has all the defense gone College Football
Alabama is 9 for 11 on third down, and yet the score is tied 28-28...such a different game these days.

It is strange that I've seen penalties on defensive players who simply push a QB down with hands to the chest. Head to head contact is always called targeting, except in this case, which knocked out the Tigers' Heisman hopeful for the remainder of the game.

Your boys did a creditable job under the circumstances Rizz. Winning in Tuscaloosa is always a tall order. But yeah, defense is not the name of the game for many squads this year. USC lost to Washington by 52-42 -- PAC-12 games are flat-out track meets this year. Like the old WAC. Well there won't be any PAC-12 to kick around next year anyway. I was glad to see Oklahoma State knock off Oklahoma in the last Bedlam game for the foreseeable future. What a shame. A continuous rivalry since 1910 over because the Sooners just had to get to the SEC. Eventually the SEC and the Big Ten will be the only conferences. Georgia had a fight on its hands before beating Missouri. My own Nittany Lions face Michigan next week. Michigan has won all nine of its games by more than 20 points, but Penn State will be the first ranked team they've faced, so who knows. It helps that the game is at Penn State, but objectively my money would still be on Michigan. James Franklin has done very poorly against both Ohio State and Michigan in recent years.

I think most casual fans are overly enamored with offense, lots of scoring, big numbers, so the sports (except soccer) loosen the screws to allow offense to flourish in hopes of pulling more fans in. In so doing, the may alienate older fans, but since we don’t have as long to live they figure on a net gain…

Of course, Alabama has a decisive edge head to head with LSU, winning double the number of games in their "rivalry." Interestingly, LSU has won more games at Tuscaloosa than in Baton Rouge. Oklahoma State vs. Oklahoma always seems to be a great game, no matter how their respective teams are doing otherwise. That's a travesty to end that annual rivalry. I've never been much of a Michigan fan (but I did enjoy Bo Schembechler) , but my niece and nephew both received their PhDs at Penn State, now tenured professors at LSU in industrial psychology and sociology, respectively. And, Paterno was Italian, so there was always an affinity for him with my father's side of the family. So, consider me on the same sideline as you for that game! Geaux Nittany Lions!

Hey Rizz, glad you have some Penn State connections! Thanks for the Geaux!! Yeah, the Bo-Woody rivalry was an all-time classic. Bo did tarnish his reputation somewhat with the ill-conceived gig as President of the Detroit Tigers. Firing Ernie Harwell was not a good way to start out. Yeah, Joe always found a way to have five or six Italian boys in the starting lineup. It always seemed to work well, though.

How can you fire Ernie Harwell? He was as good as it gets. Who did he think he could get that would be better?

How can you fire Ernie Harwell? He was as good as it gets. Who did he think he could get that would be better? The story I heard was that some consultants hired by the Tigers flagship station, WJR, thought that at 72 years old, Harwell was unable to appeal to a younger audience and that the team needed to move in a different direction when Harwell's five-year contract expired in 1990. Bo offered a one year farewell contract for Ernie, and while he accepted it, he made it clear that he was being let go because of his age. Despite Bo's legendary status in Michigan, this did not go down well and of course eventually it was Schembechler who was let go and Harwell came back to broadcast -- flawlessly like Vin Scully -- into his 90s. I remember an interview with him when he knew he had terminal cancer and he was as calm and philosophical as if he were discussing somebody he didn't know.

Big game tonight, rizz. LSU is a 15 point favorite because Florida is a terrible road team and can't tackle my dead grandmother.

Death is handled so differently by different people. I’m most impressed by Steve Jobs, who upon learning he had pancreatic cancer instead of pulling out the “why me?” card was quoted as saying “Why not me?”. The odds are the odds and money, looks, previous health don’t necessarily mean that you won’t contract an illness. Likewise my former neighbor that has ALS. He speaks of it as though it’s just another “thing” in his life, and surely doesn’t dwell on it…

What decade is this?
Michigan and Penn State combined for 134 passing yards during their Big Ten matchup today.
60 by Michigan and 74 from Penn State. 134 yards is one good quarter for a team like Oregon or Washington.

The bad new is Florida down by 3 at the half. The good news is I still have bourbon.
